Should I stay or should I go

I wonder a lot about whether to wait year or two and save money to finally buy the expensive watch (speady/Santos) or to buy a cheaper one (oris/sinn/tudor) that won't be so hard on the wallet and can be on my wrist sooner (and it feels like a wiser purchase). Thing is that the expensive one will still be hard to pull the trigger on and I fear that I wouldn't be comfortable to wear it because of the price. Then the cheaper alternative comes on mind and I know that I would wear it no worries. But the worst thing is that I know that if I would buy the cheaper one I would still be thinking of the expensive one. Did someone experience something similar? And what is your thoughts on this? Sorry for the title. I found it funny 😂

Hello. You have already said in the text that you would not be comfortable wearing the expensive one so it seems clear to me that you should go out and get an oris/sinn/tudor.

I bought a Speedmaster last year.

I picked the hessalite crystal and nylon strap option, not because of the price but because I felt it was the nearest iteration to the original Moonwatch.

When I got home (not wearing this watch thankfully) I had 2 excited dogs jumping on me to say hello.

At this point I realised that I wasn't going to wear this watch very much as I won't wear it for work, and my time at home is spent with 2 energetic dogs.

It's been worn twice in a year, and I have considered selling it, but I like it too much. If your lifestyle doesn't fit the type of watch you want to wear, don't buy that watch.

Trust me and my 5k lesson! 😂

Just use your phone to tell the time then.

This is such a difficult question to answer not knowing your motivation and collecting strategies. I will share my story and maybe it will help. I started collecting very affordable pieces. I let all the social media noise convince me I needed up step up my game so over the next couple of years I acquired brands like Oris, Grand Seiko, and Omega. What I learned about myself is I truly get no more enjoyment from those that I did from my Timex pieces. I now basically only buy Timex reissues and vintage pieces and I'm completely happy with them.

I Enjoy all my watches. Affordable to mid luxury. I stay away for the high-end watches as I like variety lol. If you have to save for it great if not mid level are just as good. What I'm saying is do what you need to do. Just don't go into debt for a hunk of metal.

Enjoy your watches

Cheers

I do have thoughts on this. I own an Oris and 2 Sinn watches. I consider them less expensive but not cheaper. The difference IMHO is more than semantics. Especially my Sinn pieces which I believe punch WAY above their weight in quality, durability and function. Of course ultimately it's up to you. Pictures below are my Oris and Sinn pieces.

Save up and by once/cry once. Stainless steel watches are meant to be worn.

Figure out why it is you like watches, then determine if it's worth the cost to buy the expensive ones.

I went through a similar situation a few years back. After sitting down and thinking it through, I came to the realization that I like having a quality watch, but I don't particularly care about heritage or history of the brand.

Buying my CW C63 Sealander drove the point home once and for all. It was the final proof that I didn't need to spend "luxury" money to get a great watch, so I completely abandoned the idea of buying luxury watches. I'd rather have that money for other interests, and wear a CW, Damasko, Marathon, etc...

Money is personal and relative to time. Only you can tell how much is comfortable. My rule of thumb is always what I consider easy, extra, disposable (if it loses 100% value) and I’m still happy and comfortable in my life go for it, if not - I can’t afford it.

Make your decision.

Be open to everything! There are so many incredible watches at every price point that it’s hard to make a bad choice if you just trust yourself. There is a ton of value in the three brands you mentioned . My two Oris get a ton more wrist time than my Rolex although I love it dearly. This morning I bought a vintage Rado for $200 off Reddit. I liked the depth of the dial color and the case shape. It will mix right in with the rest. Pick one and go have some fun!

If you stay it will be trouble, if you go it will be double.

A watch can be a joy to have and to wear... A watch can also be the horror show to wear if you think about damaging it, scratches and its monetary value each day. At that point a watch becomes the gold bar you hold in the dark, waiting 20 years to sell it for a profit.

Remember that rich guys who own Rolex watches see them as toys they can throw away anytime. Same people would not drive a Ferrari 50 km/h in fear of a damage.

It's nice to have more premium stuff in life but never put yourself in the position of enslavement to a material possesion. If you cant afford to damage a watch - dont have a watch in that value category. This is why most average wage folk adore Aliexpress watches. Good solid watches that hit above their 100-200 EUR class but if they get lost in the same year, nobody would cry for them.
