Got my first watch as a gift (sekonda chrono) and started from there really. I love a bargain so I have many watches based solely from aesthetics but am starting to dip my toe in the affordable luxury aspect of watches and starting to care more about quality than budget.
The first watch I purchased myself was a Rotary skeleton with a steel bracelet as I loved the exposed look. My first ‘premium’ watch was purchased recently by my wife and it’s a Hamilton khaki field H70555533. Hoping to gain more knowledge and more understanding of my own personal taste through this forum.
I’m curious if anyone has just gone back to zero? Was it an easy decision? How did you go about it? Do you have any regrets? My collection is compiled...
I do really love the style and as @the_real_watch_guy has mentioned, it’s a very good reminder of the patek. Unfortunately that point puts it way in the shadow of the Patek and highlights it’s shortcomings in design for me. Those cut off numbers are inexcusable for a near 5 figure sum.
If I had to pick only one watch it would be very tricky. I have still got quite a way to go until I figure out my taste as far as style/size/function etc.
Many watches I love to look at but as far as to actually own and wear, it’s a no go.
My pick as of now would probably be the A Lange & Sohne Zeitwerk w Date wheel in black. I saw this watch on watchfinder over a year ago and it still amazes me now.
More than anything I’m a dial guy and you’ve sold me half of the time with the beauty in a dial.
I still long to find a watch with a guilloche dial that really sits above the rest for me too. Breguet do it beautifully but there’s always something missing from their watches in my opinion. Not that I could ever afford a watch like that but I can admire and dream still right.
For me, the ideal 2 piece collection is a tough, functional beater that’ll go with any outfit and a classy, monochrome, minimal dress watch. The £5k limit is a little tricky but a tudor black bay pro either with a steel bracelet or a cargo strap for an everything watch Is an easy choice. The dress watch is a little trickier as there are many that fit the requirements for me. I went with a longines elegant 39mm small seconds that comes with a black leather strap.
