What’s my SKX story?

Recently I returned from a trip on which I took my SKX009. Many of my what’s on the wrist shots featured that watch. Not all my watches have a story behind them, but this one does.

I got my SKX for Christmas along with the strapcode bracelet (the original rubber strap is still in the box with the stickers attached). I had seen Random Bob videos showing mods with brighter blue dials, and I planned to do one.

However, Christmas was on a Monday and my mother passed away the previous Friday. So I wore the watch, but couldn’t quite bring myself to modify it. I had sourced the dial, but it just stayed in the drawer of miscellaneous parts.

A few years later, the SKX was discontinued. Now I was even more reluctant to do the mod. Then I found the old Hamilton with the blue dial, which I’ve posted about, and that satisfied my lust for a bright blue dial. Anyway, enough to keep the SKX as original.

Also, my parents really liked cruising (so do I), and the SKX is not out of place in any seaside setting. So that’s largely why it was my going ashore watch on the trip.

Does anyone else have a watch with some kind of background story they’d be willing to share?

Not really a great story like yours but I will share my opinion on modding an skx. I had an 013. Bought and sold back then they were less than $300 all day brand new on joma. After being discontinued I would look and prices would be insane. I even have a shirt with the skx dial on it haha. Finally this year I found a mint 011j. Had to get it. I love it and the idea of modding it is not anything I’d consider doing. I’ve modded other watches so it’s not that I’m opposed to the idea, I just love it stock. With the old movement and hardlex crystal. I think the skx is a special watch just the way it is.

Watches often can mark a life event, happy and sad. My father died in a car accident. The first people who came did not help, but stole what jewelry they could off of his body. They took his no date Rolex Sub, gold chain (it was the 70's),... Life Flight came - saw the thieves flee, but it was too late for him. He was a very generous man. My mother wanted me to have his watch, so she bought the same Sub for me. Its a great watch, and my family was into Scuba diving so it holds even more memories of family dives. It has been serviced only once by Rolex, the crystal is I believe is acrylic and scratches polish out easily, but I rarely wear it. The lume has a patina which I love. No mod story here, like yours its original and will stay that way.
