More details please. Head to head. Have your pal close their eyes and guess which one you gave them.

It's cooler to be the guy with $7,470 more dollars in his pocket, imo.

Both are very cool watches! I'd wear either one. 🍻

That would actually be pretty damn good if I actually HAD $7,470 bucks in my pocket! LOL!!

Co-worker is an Engineer and wife an MD; she gave the bona fide Speedy to him as an anniversary gift. So I guess $$ aren't as scarce LOL! He's no "watch snob" though and thinks my Pagani homage is pretty cool 😎.

To the casual observer, these two watches would look identical. Up close and personal you can see some differences, if you know what you're looking at. The Pagani is actually slightly larger (in diameter). The inward "twist" of the lugs is also less pronounced than that of the Omega as well. There are probably some other diffs (other than the obvious mechanical/operational), but I'd need to borrow his watch for a closer study and I ain't gonna ask him that favor! 🤣

One of them has a Star Trek joke.

LOL! Yes, the "1701" in the model number PD1701 is certainly a deliberate reference to a a famous TV starship! 😎

When Pagani first did it, alongside the other differences (completely different sundials, Mechaquartz, date, proportions…) the hands were also silver, but a lot of people contacted them via Reddit to more or less demand white ones, insisting Pagani had got it wrong. By now, they have also been persuaded to cover the date, and are amusingly making more colours and whatnot to make it resemble a sort of hardier Moonswatch.

I still might get one at some point, but I genuinely think they should have at least kept that further-from-the-omega model around. The only reason I haven’t is because I have a different mecha-chrono from them, and my not-a-speedie is my Titanium Accurist that bares a strong resemblance to the speedy-date from a few years back. I didn’t even know what a speedmaster was when I got that. Just like the design.

edit: my not-a-speedie with borderline useless tachy (chrono on subdial)

I bought one of these because I gave up on the MoonSwatch. Love it, and feel like it’s better than the MoonSwatch.

I have a Pagani BB GMT homage and the real deal. Obviously thousands of dollars difference and if it’s worth it that’s between you and your wallet. The Pagani is okay, looks good, feels solid, not the same size but in use and function it’s not even close. I needed a GMT for some international travel and wish I would have saved the $100 as it’s even hard to set and the hands jump when pushing in the crown. So looks are okay but if you’re planning a trip to the moon you better get the Omega otherwise you may miss your retro burn timing and end up circling the sun for ever.

Yes, the proportions of the Pagani "Speedy" are not exactly the same as the Omega ... close, but not exact. My co-worker's Speedmaster has the acrylic crystal, while the P.D. has sapphire. Of course the casebacks are different 😊. You mentioned Pagani doing away with the date complication? Some maybe yes, but my version 3 model has the date at the 4:30 position (same as my Seiko SSB031), with a color-matched (black) wheel, so it's actually pretty discreet, and I kinda like it! 😎

Your PD1701 is sweet. Daytona-esque vibes for sure! Totally agree that it's likely better than the MoonSwatch. Cheaper too! 😎

Yup, I prefer that version with the date. In fact I think I even prefer the silver hands, and some of their colour variants are really quite nice/unique. It’s unfortunate there’s such a stigma around Pagani in particular (as evidenced in otherwise balanced YouTube videos) as they are very much in the tradition of affordable brands riffing on luxury designs. (Timex, Sekonda, Accurist, even Seiko and Citizen, and now San Martin, Steeldive, and Pagani. My feel is that Pagani is actually the brand that offers the biggest amount of changes if anyone does more than glance at a watch.)

Unfortunately not planning a trip to the Moon any time soon LOL! Get your point though. The chrono hand on my Pagani doesn't seem to operate (quite) as well as the one on my Seiko SSB031, even though they're supposed to house the same caliber movements?

Time to watch Apollo13 again!

·

I opened up my Pagani and it is not a Seiko caliber. The Seiko NH 34 (GMT) caliber works much better and that’s not it.

I can see that! As far as the Pagani PD1701 goes though, it's a meca-quartz, engined with the VK63 movement, which is AFAIK is an aftermarket Seiko 6T63 movement ... yet as I previously mentioned doesn't seem to perform quite as well (chrono hand anyways) as the movement in my SSB031. Peculiar, but could just be the particular Pagani watch that I received? Others may not have that experience.

I hardly (ever) use the chrono function, so am not butt-hurt about it. I just love the fact that the PD1701 looks like the famous Omega Moonwatch, which I'll likely never afford or justify the expenditure! 😀
