A good trade…? Or a terrible one??

Just an enthusiast here, who knows nothing about watch values, asking for help to those more knowledgeable (and wiser!).

I’ve been offered a trade: my Omega Speedmaster MK40 for a Seamaster 300 M Automatic (36mm) plus cash. I value my watch at slightly under 3k and the other watch is slightly under 2.5k.

First question: how wrong are we on the pricing of either watch?

Second question: is a 36mm Seamaster 300 M a sought out model? Is there a market for it?

Third and final question: would you do it if you were me?

Thank you all!!!

Not a fan of the speed master and dislike the chopped numerals, but it is the more interesting dial. The seamaster is more sought after in the larger size, The plain unwaved dial was a short run so could be a long term gain.

Have you tried it on as it's going to be a hart over head choice.

I would go seamaster but I like smaller watchs so for me it's a no brainer and would make a nice addition to the Goldeneye, bb36

$2.7K for the MK40. $1.5K for the 300M.

Keep what you have.

First off, thank you so much for your reply!

The Seamaster does have the waved dial. (apologies for that; clearly chose a bad photo). Would that change your rationale?

I’ll try it on just in case, even though 36mm might be a tad small for my 18cm wrist.

No would personally go seamaster but think you would be better with the larger size trying it is the best option.

Man… thank you for that feedback!! I thought I wasn’t too far off a fair price on my Speedmaster - it really is in pretty good condition - so this is good to know. I don’t want to rip anyone off, if I do sell it someday.

But I had a feeling the Seamaster was a bit overpriced for a 36mm, regardless of its condition.

So again: thank you for your thoughts!

Keep the speedmaster

While I love a 36mm seamaster I love your speedmaster more. The dial is great and a lot less common.

·

I’d keep the MK40 if I were in your position.

·

In any other situation, I would think exactly like you, my friend. And the Speedy would be it! But on this particular situation, selling my watch will free up funds for those other watches I really want to own. (All of which are significantly more affordable, by the way)

I no longer look for that high end, exquisite piece…

Thank you for your comment!

It really is, isn’t it? It’s busy, colourful, complicated… but somehow it just works. And not many of these out there. Plus, at 39mm it wears like a dream.

Thank you!!

I think I will, actually! Plus I’m not really a “diver” kind of guy, even though I have a couple of them.

PS: really cool, clean California dial on that Tandorio of yours!

That Speedmaster is the watch that started Hodinkee. It’s fun but still has class. I’ve been looking for one in good condition for a while. Don’t let it go.

The MK40 is definitely the more interesting of the two, and would be my choice. That said, if you’re going to wear the seamaster more and get more enjoyment out of it, then it’s not a bad idea!

I don’t think I’d enjoy the Seamaster more, especially in 36mm. And I’d be aware of that all the time!

Also, it seems this isn’t the best of trades… so yeah, I believe I’ll hold on to my MK40 for now…

Keep the Speedmaster.

I think I will, sir! At least for now.

PS: really cool collection you have there! Aside from the Seamaster (beauty!), really cool Willards…

I would keep that Speedy regardless of value. It’s a more interesting watch.

I’ve decided I’ll do just that!

And sir, your collection is just unreal! That Avigation Big Eye with the blue dial, the Bathyscaphe and the Legend Diver are three pieces I could only dream of…

And congrats on the Raymond Weil; it’s a beauty!

Thanks. I try to collect pieces I love so I’m never disappointed.

I’d keep the speedmaster it’s an unusual watch in the range and the 36mm diver is too small

My thoughts exactly! But i deemed wise to ask anyway, just in case I was about to make a huge mistake…

Allow me to assume you love your watch. Otherwise, why would you've bought it in the first case? Moving on, does this other watch hit you like that? The $500.00 difference will be gone quickly. Then you have that watch. Is that something you can live with?

Me? I wouldn't base a permanent decision on $500.00.
