Surprised at the selection of women’s watches by IWC

Hi there! While shopping with my fiancée at Ginza in Tokyo, we walked into the IWC boutique as I had an appointment to collect my watch strap. While we were waiting, the lady attending to me recommended that we check out some of their models that just came in.

After a quick conversation about what models I own (mainly pilots watches), she recommended the portofino collection. They are unisex watches, however there are some really beautiful pieces that is absolutely for a ladies wrist imo.

One of them is this Portofino automatic 37 (IW658602)

If you were browsing the IWC website, you could easily skip over this watch as the pictures used online look quite unassuming.

However seeing the watch first-hand really blew me away. It’s a beautiful piece and considering how me and my fiancée dislike diamond on watches, both of us agreed that this is done in a really classy and elegant way.

There are some others, but this one in particular really impressed us.

Any other watch brands out there that make beautiful ladies watches? I have seen some such as the Longines dolce vita, Cartier watches, the calatrava from patek or the omega deville.

My wife has a Lady GS with the snowflake dial that she wears at the office. At the time of purchase they only had that model, but they have recently expanded that line (diamonds etc).

So I got her interested in watches (success) but now she wants a Vacheron Constantin (oh no).

Why do so many Swiss watch makers think that watches that appeal to women = diamonds?

LOVE my Portofino Chronograph. Have it 12 years and it’s still my favourite watch I’ve ever tried on.

My younger daughter is staying with us a few days before she and her husband move into their new home. She does not prefer so called lady’s watches, actually the BB58 was mine while the Cartier Tank XL was a present from her mom and me. Women should wear what pleases them.

Agreed. However in this instance, when we held this IWC Portofino, it looks and feels amazing. And both me and my fiancée are the type that dislikes diamonds on watches. We were surprised at how much we ended up liking it. So maybe there’s a reason why Swiss watch makers keep making diamond watches.

Their portofino moon phase in steel case with fewer diamonds is really a looker - honestly it’s make a great unisex dress watch if they dropped the diamonds entirely.

As far as other brands, personally my wife was really drawn to Nomos. She did really like that they made watches that look great on a woman’s wrist without resorting to the usual diamonds or under-sized cases.

Agreed, I’m not saying they should stop altogether, and sometimes a bit of bling is exactly what’s desired, but many firms seem to have the mindset that they have to add diamonds to any watch for women to like them.

And hopefully the trend towards unisex watches will mean there will be more precious stone free options.

I can’t seem to pull my wife away from watch’s with diamonds…🫣

I wish that they never made such watch’s as they look cheap the minute we leave the store.

It’s what they like so you know what they say happy wife happy life.

I keep waiting for IWC to update the larger Portofino models. I expected it to happen this summer. We did get the pointer date and calendar watches earlier this year, but I thought we would get a new movement for the larger models. I rather like the Portofino line overall.
