How do you like your MR01?

My wife and I are having our first child. A daughter to be more specific 😊 what better way to celebrate than with a watch right?! 😉 And with the next release of the Baltic MR01, I can’t help but consider it in my top 3 options to mark the occasion. One thing though, I’m worried about longevity of the movement. What are your thoughts? Did you get one of the first batches? It live up expectations or has it been an underwhelming experience?

My opinion is that it all depends on how long you plan on owning and wearing the watch. The Chinese movement is not as high quality as a contemporary Swiss or Japanese one but is likely to be functional - that type of movement design has been around for at least 60 years meaning it's not a high tech challenge to manufacture one.

So the movement is unlikely to fail in the next 5-10 years. If you want to own/wear it beyond that it's a lottery as it's a Chinese movement with no Western distribution or parts availability. Maybe parts/replacement movements will be available in ten years, maybe not. Who knows.

Whereas if you go for something based on one of the workhorse movements made by Sellita or Miyota or Seiko parts are likely to be cheap and abundant.

If your budget allows and want a Swiss movement, check out Furlan Mari Sector.

I have a very cheap Hangzhou auto in one of mine, I guess it's 15 yrs old now. It runs as soon as you pick it up, and reminds me of an excitable puppy when it sees you pick up the lead. From there, without shake or wind, it runs all day and is between +8 and+12 the next morning. And that's a cheap mass produced movement that's in dozens of watches (20 jewel 2189).

As it's to celebrate something as important as the birth of a child I'd go for something high quality that'd last, not a built to a price microbrand. Baltic always strike me as style over substance, like most micro's. Get something classy that your daughter will be proud to wear when she eventually inherits it.
