How best to move on the watches we don’t wear

Quite a few years ago I purchased this Baume & Mercier Hampton. Used it as an occasional dress watch. It is a smaller watch (more classic size 24.4 x 40.6). Trouble is that I cannot read it without glasses now. I had it up on eBay for ages but wasn’t getting interest even down at £350. Chrono24 is claiming an average price of £717.

What should I do?

1 let it go for peanuts

2 leave it in the watch box

And where is a viable place to sell? Chrono24 seems to have fees of c6-7% which seem high. EBay has been a bust. Anywhere else?

If you're not a member of a forum (or reddit) with a connection to Watchrecon the only place you'll get eyes on the watch is ebay. It isn't really that popular of a design these days. Unfortunately,if you sell , it will be at a loss.

But peanuts in hand are better than a watch not on the wrist.

If you don't need the money, it may be better to just keep it for the moment and maybe try selling it again at some point in the future.  I've noticed that interest in rectangular watches seems to be picking up a bit lately, and if that's really the situation, it may be worth a bit more in the not too distant future.

Gift it to a family member or close friend… you get the pleasure of making someone’s day and occasionally seeing it on their wrist!

I like that - how old?

Maybe WatchCrunch should have a "Market" section where members can list their watch orphans for sale. I never sell any of my watches - just give them away as gifts. Seems like far too much of a hassle to sell them - certainly is easier to buy them than to sell them.

I've had a mostly positive experience buying and selling watches on reddit.  I bought a couple things, then started selling cheaper watches (under $100) to build up some transaction history.

Given you are in England, it's probably going to be more challenging since the reddit audience is US centric.

I would use it to trade in for another watch at a used dealer.

Yes, that's not worth selling for the price. If you don't need the money I'd keep it and maybe pass it on, or wait to trade it for something else you want.

I've failed to give it away!  Not trendy shape so son not interested.  A marketplace here would be good, however, the community is still rather small* so I assume that it wouldn't be viable yet.

* based on what I'm seeing as activity levels - I may be wrong

Nice watch.  If you can find someone you know like a family member that is interested in it, maybe you can give it away.

This is a good idea, too. I passed on my Seiko SARBs to two of my nephews when they were teens. They've been wearing it ever since. I wouldn't say they've become "watch guys" like their uncle but hey, gotta start somewhere, right?

I’ve found that using ebay auction will generally enable one to unload a watch. However, as other have noted, at a loss. I don’t like taking a loss, but more than a dozen watches (yes I have more currently) are challenging to give wrist time too and maintain.
I really like the “give away” comments. We need more and younger people to have an interest.

I have completed ~20 transactions on WatchUSeek. That is typically where I find new homes for my orphans, but the market is what the market is. Chrono24 prices are quite high compared to private forum sales in my experience, and most used watches will sell for significantly less than retail (PP Nautilus, AP RO, and Rolex excluded).

I am thinking about a watch cull but my watches are of the affordable type. In the past, I have culled my shoe and boot collection and given pairs to charity shops. Does anyone have experience of giving watches to them? It seems a shame to hang on to them when other people could be wearing them.
