Any watch design guilty pleasures?

For some reason I love watches that are brutalist in design but in precious metals some examples include the Cartier Santos Royal Oak and in a lesser way the Cartier tank I just love anything with screws sharp angles and anything of that nature. In addition to this I love simplicity in complex watches like the JLC Master Control chrono calanders and some Patek examples of the same type

My wife wears a two-tone Cartier Santos (medium) and I love it. I think it looks too small on my wrist, but I still grab it once in a while 🤣. You’re right, something about the screws make the design just NICE!

Same. I like the Royal oak from this artistic point, but I dislike the hype. If one would were to sit me down, show pre-watch-disease me two watches: a watch like the Tissot Gentleman/Explorer/OP/SARB033/etc. and the RO side by side, and have me guess which is the more in-demand watch, I would answer the black-dial dress watch every time. If there weren’t a major luxury watch brand behind it, I’m a little doubtful that the RO would be around today and be so coveted.

My guilty pleasure are watches that are unique and tastefully tooly hunks of steel. Watches such as the P01, Seiko Monster, Spinnaker “Picard”, and maybe the Zlatoust diver? I was going to say “unlike Invicta”—and I still believe that—but it gave me a thought: Invicta could make a similar watches and it work. They have a lot of experience (for better or for worse). All they would have to do is make it not garish, market it fairly, and make it a reasonable size.

Love this watch so much I want it in solid yellow tho but the two tone is a close second the only steel model is a bore to me but everyone else seems to love it lol I have really liked the vintage examples of the santos in two tone a lot they seem to have a higher percentage of gold compared to the new ones because of the small case of those and I like that

My wife wants me to get the rose gold one (so that we can have matching models) but I’m not used to wearing gold. Even though the steel version is a bit plain, I believe that the polished surfaces give it a bit of a “bling” which is kind of enough for me. Unless until I get used to wear more blingy stuff if you know what I mean. 😅

I completely understand it’s all personal and I can see how that would be the case idk really know which one I would get between the yellow and rose if you get one please post it I wanna see

I get what you mean about the polished finishing being blingy. If it means anything, I think hers looks great on you, but I think I would follow you and chose the all-steel one for similar reasons.

I love tonneau/barrel shaped cases.

I only wear stainless steel watches. Precious metals always came off as flashy to me BUT gold case with a dark brown exotic strap (think lizard/alligator) 🤤

My watch guilty pleasures are having similar taste to Donald Trump (yuck!) - eg these two:

Not a design feature necessarily but I’m weirdly into integrated rubber straps… the Aquanaut, Alpiner Extreme, some Hublot stuff (don’t tell anyone) LOL

·

I’m a complete sucker for leaf hands, and, well, here are some photos that illustrate my current fascinations

This sector dial from Omega is more or less ne plus ultra, yet there are others…

Such as this example from VC.

In other news and without comment, these represent my quirks:

I just have an unhealthy addiction to gold

It was a long time ago when I was invited to some social event sponsored by the 3Bs( Breitling, Hugo Boss, BMW) that I met a tall gent who seemed a little lost amongst all the usual freeloaders, he was wearing a gold Royal Oak perpetual moonphase, a watch that I had never seen before but I was impressed. Turns out he was the new Swiss agent for the brand here in Canada, came from a Swiss family that was deeply influential and connected to the industry. I was wearing a 2T Datejust, had just purchased a 2T 80s Santos, practically just fallen off back of a pick up truck in the hobby. We became friends so I appreciated that he knew a little more about watch trends than I and respected that. His personal preference was either all gold or all steel, his Trinity was PP, AP and Brequet. Decades later, I still believe his insights are decent. Just sharing a few thoughts.

Looks fine on your wrist. Rock it

Oh… she’s screwed 🤣

I think the Bulgari diagono takes a lot of cues from the brutalist design ethos. It feels like a hunk of steel on the wrist, but has a very understated charm to it.
