Solar Vs. Non-Solar Quartz

Good morning Crunchers! I'm joining Tim Johnson tonight to discuss solar watches, and water carriage/purification while outdoors. My question to you is a simple one; How do you feel about solar powered watches?

For me, I will generally take a solar watch over the standard equivalent watch. I've not got much time with analog solar watches (had a single Citizen eco-drive in college), as most of it has been with Casio solar G-Shocks. The only downside that I've seen to solar is legibility of the dial/display. I've got a few G-Shocks, and the 5610u pictured is easily the most transparent display among them, which can make it a little harder to read in certain lighting conditions. I've not had the issue on the analog watches that I've played with, albeit that I've not messed with a ton of them.

So how goes it for you? Do you feel the "need" for solar, or are you more ambivalent on the topic?

I prefer solar quartz, but it’s not a requirement for me.

It’s not a need. Just a preference. Love them. I have 7 solar watches so far between Casio, citizen and Seiko

Solar is preferred!

Love them, I have 3 at the moment, same watch as you and set forget and with the multiband. No problem with the display and the lights works well too in the dark. If I like two digitals and one with solar, would chose that one almost every time.

Love my solar watches—have two Vaers and a Seiko. I have absolutely no issues with legibility for any of them. Solar is just so much more practical for outdoor and extended use. They’re my go-tos for camping, canoeing, etc

I have a solar Casio (15 years old) Seiko (5months) and a Garmin instinct2 (1year). I would like to get a GShock GW-M5610U-1JF to compare to the 15year old still going strong. I have plenty of mechanical and quartz watches. Solar is a great bonus.

Always solar and mb6
