Seeing all the holiday and seasonal watch goodness on WC over the last week, I haven’t been able to partake much myself on the this forum. (I would li...
Personally, I’ve done the watch thing in only the past four years, and gifted four people watches. Three of them were not particularly keen on watches: my father, a good friend and my wife. In the case of my father and my friend, the watch purchases didn’t really covert them. (My mother tells me my Dad stopped wearing the watch shortly after he received it which is what I thought may happen.) My wife has received three watches from me over the years, and she wears one everyday. But it is the cheap pink Casio F-91W that gets worn 99% of the time. (She is very practical, which is also something that I love about her.) The GS I bought her for our 10th anniversary only comes out on special days now. The fourth person is my 8 year old daughter, and a blue F-91W is what I bought for her. She loves to wear it as an accessory but it hasn’t made her any more punctual. (And when you live in Japan and with her mother, oh boy, I really wish she’d learn to really read the time.)
And now that my collection has reached 8 watches, plus 4 more watches that I avoid “counting”, I’m thinking it is time that I gift a few of my pieces to others.
Yeah, mine was the SARB017 Alpinist. I thought the 4 o’clock crown and crown guards asymmetrical and ugly, and the use of gilt and Mercedes hands garish. Now it is by far my favorite and I love the points above. (I feel I have to apologize as I keep mentioning this watch on the forum, practically fawning over this one.)

I have thought much the same. I grow sentimentally attached to my watches, especially the affordable ones. The money isn’t the issue, so gifting appeases the sentimentality.
I bought a Sony camera ostensibly to take pictures of my growing daughters and scenery on hiking trips, but quietly I have also bought it to pose my watches for pics. I’m not that good and feel to self-consious to go outside with the camera and watches, but playing around in the kitchen and tube extentisons I got this pic.
But I really love seeing the pictures others post. It is great inspiration for both watch collecting and looking for new adventures and memories with the watches!
My general feeling is that Natos don’t quite work for me on the most dressy watches. I don’t have a Saxonia or Calatrava to try a fabric strap on, but my Max Bill automatic seems out of place on a NATO. The SARB035 that I own looks good in my opinion on a single-pass, but I also think the NATO picks up the “sports” dna of the design, something like a Rolex Explorer, OP or Aquaterra on NATO.
And then again, maybe it really is more the person’s fashion and style. I have to wear a shirt and tie for work, so maybe that is why I prefer my Max Bill on something other than a NATO. (And it does look good on a single-pass perlon, IMO.)
