Why do you gift a watch?

I recently gifted this Braun watch to a good friend of mine. He was kind enough to assist me in some important matter, and also saw his wrist naked. He said he inherited his father´s Rolex, but it had a broken crown, and did not feel confortable wearing it because he is a teacher and would feel out of place. Moreover, the cost of repairing a vintage Rolex day-date. So I took 4 watches from my collection where he decided for this one. All sub $100. In the last two years I have given away at least 6 watches. Do you gift watches and why?

Personally, I’ve done the watch thing in only the past four years, and gifted four people watches. Three of them were not particularly keen on watches: my father, a good friend and my wife. In the case of my father and my friend, the watch purchases didn’t really covert them. (My mother tells me my Dad stopped wearing the watch shortly after he received it which is what I thought may happen.) My wife has received three watches from me over the years, and she wears one everyday. But it is the cheap pink Casio F-91W that gets worn 99% of the time. (She is very practical, which is also something that I love about her.) The GS I bought her for our 10th anniversary only comes out on special days now. The fourth person is my 8 year old daughter, and a blue F-91W is what I bought for her. She loves to wear it as an accessory but it hasn’t made her any more punctual. (And when you live in Japan and with her mother, oh boy, I really wish she’d learn to really read the time.)

And now that my collection has reached 8 watches, plus 4 more watches that I avoid “counting”, I’m thinking it is time that I gift a few of my pieces to others.

I have gifted my wife a few watches...but does not wear them. Fortunally my youngest daughter has taken to watches, and does wear them everyday to school... a couple of swatch, 2 casios and a Timex. She has also taken a Moonswatch that I gave to her mother.😉

Yes lots over the years, to many friends and family members for many reasons. Sometimes just to cheer them up.

They're not always appreciated either, but that's the risk you take.

Most recent (the last year) Seiko Alpinist reissue, a Seiko 5 55th anniversary, Hamilton Khaki King quartz and a Cartier Ballon Bleu (to my Lovely Lady who is into the hobby herself) .

Last year an Omega Ladymatic to my sister and a Quartz Aqua Terra to my Dad, which he wore for a few months before he decided it was too posh and he wanted to sell it - needless to say I bought it back from him (it's now probably my most worn watch) and bless him he used the money to put towards a car for my Better half.

Gifting watches I find very satisfying and I've even got a few folks into the hobby, which is a bonus coz I've now got people IRL I can talk to about our passion 😉👍

To date, I have only gifted to my wife. And in that case it was the women's version of one she just gifted me thereby giving us a matched set. (she had gifted money toward a watch of my choosing as she "has no idea" what watch I would want despite my hinting very VERY clearly)

My daughters and even my wife are accustomed to receiving watches from me both presents that I buy for them and certain watches that were mine that I want them to own. I gave a Breitling to our older daughter that she and I bought together when she was 10-11 still in elementary school, years later she had resigned her steady job to fly to Kenya for a safari, thought the time was right for her to receive that watch. My son in law is a G-Shock guy never bothered with mechanical watches until I gave him a black steel Breitling that I had fully serviced for his birthday, he was thrilled. I start to understand why so many persons give generously to charities, the act of giving might be the most satisfying selfish act an individual can indulge in.

I don’t like getting gifts (my wife says my love language is not gifts 😅).

But I’ve given a few to my little brother, and bought for my wife.

Thank you! You’ve given extra creedance to a plot I’ve been spinning in my head to substantiate a Moonswatch purchase. My older daughter loves astronomy and light blue…

You are a lucky guy to share the hobby with your daughter. I have hope for my younger one too, who already has opinions on which watch she likes me wearing (the Max Bill). I’m looking forward to gifting her one of mine.

I gave my adult child a watch, her first G-shock. She doesn't take her phone into the warehouse so knowing the time is helpful with a quick glance at the wrist

"she likes me wearing (the Max Bill)" I do want that one in my collection, something with the Bauhaus vibe.

I've given a couple watches each to my (adult) sons & 3 Corgeuts to Good Will when I was no longer interested in homage watches

·

I've bought my wife a Timex she wears regularly and my do so again (the new Marlin Jet). The moment of giving away watches from my own collection hasn't come yet, but certainly will.

In the last year I have given my kids all Sinn & Formex models from my collection, gifted our Security Director a ten year Casio and given several micros to my son-in-law as well as a watch to my neighbor's grandson.
