Just ordered the exact watch yesterday to add to the collection. I'm sure your friend will enjoy it and hopefully see the beauty in Casios renowned durability for the price. Maybe it'll even turn them on to the idea of G-Shocks eventually.

To be fair, this is basically what the king looks like when you take the bezel off of it.

I can promise you it'll be fine if you have an 8 inch wrist. I have a 7 inch wrist and get away with wearing the larger G-Shocks.

Just ordered The Pepsi Marlin after seeing this post. Having a decent collection of Casio/G-shocks, it was a no brainer for me to get one. $50 and a decent battery life with 200m wr. It's something someone can wear and appreciate without getting upset once it gathers scars.
