Help Needed Please!

I’m currently deciding to change the direction of my watch collection.

My focus was to collect iconic watches Sub $500. I want to switch to saving up for luxury watches. I’m picking up a Tossot PRX powermatic 80 today to Dip my toes because I honestly love it and I’m able to afford it. 🙏🏾 🤲🏾

Moving forward I want to possibly pick up a longine for the end of this year ( more so to continue to dip my toes but I do really like a few models around 1-1.5k ) then save for 1-2 years for a bigger watch 5-10k

I prefer sports steel models, divers and models like the explorer.

I was thinking Tudor, Grand Seiko, Rolex,(# wait list) and Omega.

Is there any other companies I should consider in that range and if so is there a particular Watch to focus on?

I know ultimately it’s what I like but suggestions will help being that this would be considerably a lot of coin for me.

Ps. I of course am saving and spending responsibly. I have money to save and invest in my future after the fact.

Thank you in advance!

For your "intermediate phase" (circa 1k to 1,5k), I would add Nivada Grenchen, which are on my "intermediate list" is I ever wander over the 500$ budget too.

I kinda like the German watches as well in the "luxury" level such as Junghans (Bauhaus style, 1k to 3k) and Nomos Glasshüte (more expensive).

·

You've referenced three watch brands that are on top of each other in terms of offerings but not necessarily price point. Really depends what you want from the watch in terms of aesthetics and brand recognition.

Assuming you like diver/sports models, I would look at Grand Seiko (SBGJ239 $6,600), JLC (Polaris Date $10k), UN (Marine Torpilleur $9k), Omega (Seamaster 300 $6700) and Glashutte Original (SeaQ $9,900).

Note -- you can buy comparable if not better spec'd watches for much less if you move off of ultra-luxury brands but that's a personal choice.

If you haven't already, suggest you watch this before jumping up so many levels in such a short timeframe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlFXT3Upv-w (I'm Done With Watch Collecting! Selling My Entire Collection For A Tourbillon, A Diver & Casio Trio)

Thank you for the feed back. I did mention a price point of 5-10k.

You did suggest watches in that price point anyway so thank you.

grand seiko was definitely also in my field of view that I forgot to mention. I’m attracted to a diver / sports style or explorer style the most.

You make a very valid point about specs away from luxury!

Yes! It’s funny I just watched that video yesterday. Definitely something to chew on before moving forward…

Thank you for the feed back

JLC, Zenith, IWC, and so on. If you are thinking 5-10k there is a lot to choose from😉

Thanks. I own a lot of those brands already which is why I was going for brands that cost more but with great value.

I appreciate you.

love the PRX, both the Quartz and Automatic versions, have you looked at Formex and you mentioned Grand Seiko they are amazing watches, you'll get alot of attention and comments on those, GOOD LUCK 👍

Jomashop is where I got my Swiss watches from. I get Swiss watch parts at Perrin. My last 2 Tissot Powermatic 80's (33mm) were under $180.00 cdn and a Certina DS4 for under $300.00 cdn.

Its difficult.

I entered this hobby last January and bought maybe 10 watches in 4 months. It got a bit silly.

I then sold a good chunk of them, and Im now down to my SMP, SBP143, Vostok and a G Shock.

The temptation is strong to buy more but realistically I dont wear anything other than the above, and even then the SMP gets 99% of the wrist time.

I think tying future purchases to life events/achievements is the way Im looking now. Im working towards becoming Chartered in my profession, which should hopefully be around Jan next year. Il then look to get something that;

A) Isnt a dive watch

B) Is more dressy/special

This doesnt stop me enjoying watch content, forums and discussions. In the interim Ive found strap changes help keep things fresh.

EDIT: Hit submit too soon. Basically saying why not pace yourself a bit and try tying purchases to something, so they mean a bit more and it also gives you time to save and a target!

I haven’t thought about it that way.

I know I’m definitely able to stop buying right away.

I might skip the longine and wait until something really special happens in my life before making a move.

I’ll save money with no intent to by at any peticular time so not to focus to much on when I have just enough to buy just because. This has given me a very different perspective

I thank you!

·

It rlly depends on what you like but within 5-10K, I'd get a SMP 300 in Blue if I got a diver.

Agree on Nomos. While Nomos doesn't have much in the sports arena but the Club and Ahoi are nice all around/everyday watches that can handle water.

Haven’t been to crazy for the style but I need to look into learning more about Nomos over all before I can write them off. I have heard great things about the watches but I haven’t come across one that I think would be for me.

Thank you!

Consider independent and micro brand as as Damasko with ** in house movement **

I checked JS for the powermatic 80 just yesterday I picked up the blue dial.

I didn’t see it listed on JS for the blue dial but the black was there for $520. I had already ordered the blue one from a local dealer who we negotiated a price at $560 with taxes included. I love on NY so after takes in the JS listed price it comes out the same with $6 to spare. But I guess if we include the gas it took to get there 🙃

Either way JS as of yesterday didn’t have the dial version I wanted but I agree they are a good place to get a good deal.

Thank you!

Never heard of Formex

I’ll check ‘em out.

I got my PRX AUTO in hand now. I think it’s awesome and a perfect watch to stop buying for a year or two and enjoy learning info and going to see watches withought the intent to buy. Freeing really.

Buy used, you get far more for your money. For example I paid £1300 for a quartz Aqua Terra, £530 for a Willard & £350 for a 1959 Alpinist reissue.

·

Go with the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date on stainless bracelet. You could also consider Doxa Divers.

·

If you love integrated bracelet/retro 80s watch like the prx check the Maen Manhattan. I'm looking foward to buy it and it's pretty reasonnably price around 700$ usd.

Wow, lots of good opinions here. So here’s mine, hopefully good, to add to the list. Next watch, Christopher Ward, hands down, great quality, great value and well within your price range. Real nice divers and more. You’ll fine a lot of great reviews and comments about CW just about anywhere you look.

For that next step, you need to decide what you want. Is the a gap you want to fill? Color? Style?

Tudor is a great option, in your scenario I’d go Tudor, no hesitation. Rolex is way to expensive and hard to get, Omega’s are awesome and as mentioned above, the Speedy is the most iconic watch out there but more than $5k new, Grand Seiko is loved by a lot of people too.

Lastly, you may want consider pre-owned from a trusty seller, there are plenty.

I thought you might appreciate this fun photo from a while back, sometimes I can’t decide which to wear 😊 and I know of what I speak, my Speedy and Datejust get wrist time to.

I’m going to look into CW

Tudor is definitely on my list but it’s tough because my fav watch is from them is a black bay but I feel that if I choose that then I should just hold out longer for the rolex sub no date which is the Watch I really want. 🫠

Anyway, I appreciate your insite.

I’ll def do some home work on CW.

Thank you.
