I’m H-A-P-P-Y

This one hits me pretty hard… if you’re only interested in Rolex, AP or Patek then keep scrolling, this post won’t excite you.

Technically my first watch was a super cheap Armitron with a Velcro strap. After several years of daily wear (you can imagine what a Velcro strap looks like after a kid wears it for 3-4 years), my grandmother bought me a Fossil for Christmas. It was my first real watch, and it was made of metal rather than plastic! The watch cost around $60, which was a lot for a watch in my family; after all, my grandfather’s Timex watches weren’t more than $10 or so. But I had to have THIS one because the dial changed color - and for a 10/11 year old kid it doesn’t get much cooler than that!

I wore the Fossil every day for a year or two, until one day I lost it after a hockey game. I used to take the watch off and leave it in my pants pocket during a game or practice. Afterwards in the locker room I’d change back into my clothes and put the watch back on. Well one day after a game I realized that I didn’t have my watch on, and it wasn’t in my pocket. It must have fallen out somewhere. This would have been around 2001/2002.

Grandma passed in January 2021, and since then I’ve been keeping an eye on eBay to see if a Fossil like the one she bought turns up. Four years later and I found a nearly pristine example in good working order.

Is it a prime example of a horological masterpiece? No. Would I have bought one today if it didn’t have a sentimental purpose? No. I bought it because now when I look at my watch I’ll think of Gram. I’m H-A-P-P-Y (sing it like Christian Bale in the movie “Ford vs. Ferrari”)… to me this is what watch collecting is about ❤️

Sorry to hear about your grandmothers passing. This is definitely what the hobby is all about, I’m glad you were able to find the same model

Thank you. My grandfather passed 37 days before her in 2020. When my mom asked if I wanted anything of his as they were cleaning his stuff out of the house, I asked for his watch. It’s another Fossil, but he wore it every day for the last few years of his life… interesting how the collection is built.

I hope so. I try to wear it while doing yard work or home construction projects, as that’s what he would do while wearing it.

Bro I have a watch that is the worst piece of garbage ever but its absolutely priceless to me. When I was sixteen I bought my dad a watch. I had a paper route and so I didn't have a lot of money and bought my dad this super clunky basic quartz with fake sub dials but at the time it was the best I could afford. He had better watches but he wore that one because I bought it. After his death I found the watch in his belongings and man did I become super allergic to something in that room all of a sudden.🤣 I will never get rid of it because of its sentimental value so I am super glad you got one to remind you of your grandmother.
