Review of Garrett’s Sky Dweller

My friend Garrett who is not into watches and usually doesn’t wear one showed up at my house last night wearing this. Something is rotten in the air of Denmark I thought. “G nice watch, where’d you get it and why?” “I won it in a poker game but don’t tell my wife.” Wait a second, I’ve played in a few of those games and something is amiss. “Wowza, that must have been some pot!” I exclaimed. “Ah hell no we don’t smoke no pot, drink enough beer to raise the Titanic but none of that whacky weed stuff.” he answered. So I asked him if I could examine the Sky Dweller, notice I didn’t use Rolex because it isn’t. But it was a good replica down to the functioning bezel complications. I asked him how much did he win on the hand that got him the watch? “About $290 so it was a whopper!” Garrett answered. “Can you show me how to set the damn time I look at this watch and I’m thinking I’m watching The Wheel of Fortune game show.”

I convinced Garrett to trade me the watch for one of mine, he picked a Vostok Komandirskie because “It has a tank on it, cool!” only because nothing good would happen if he kept it. We are both happy, he gets a watch with a Russian tank on the dial and I don’t have to worry someone else may get scammed by a Chinese fake Rolex. Knowledge is power. Be vigilant and do your research before buying any watch and yes the Replicas coming out of China are that good. If the Chinese will clone a $75 Vostok and sell for $45 then they will definitely clone any watch. I can see the need for a replica in high crime areas, leave the genuine Submariner at home and wear the fake on your walk through Central Park.

That does look pretty good! Congrats, I guess?

·

With you until the end, as I’ve never understood the conclusion that wearing a fake is less likely to make you a street crime victim.

·

Does the command wheel work or is the month stuck on August?

·

Command wheel or the fluted bezel works exactly as Rolex designed. Remember, the Chinese have even cloned the tooling, CAD and machinery equipment the genuine brands use. When your operational budget is less than 1% of the brands that invested all that money yes you can manufacture and sell a $15,000 watch for $1,500.00 But this will end it has to unless people no longer see the value in brand history, generational craftsmanship and a connection with horological history. What is this World coming to?

·

Yes you could be a street victim but you’re less likely to John Wayne on some thug and get killed over a fake then a genuine.

·

A fake is a fake. If you wrap a $100 bill around a bunch of $1 bills and go out and flash your fake roll around you're just as likely to get robbed for that fake roll. Same with a fake watch. If you're worried about getting robbed don't wear an expensive watch out. If you want to be seen in a fake watch, well that's your call. I don't.

Well, with what I’m currently wearing a Vostok Komandirskie, nobody is robbing me for my watch, jokes on them, they’d either be real early or real late on their next meeting but not on time.

I had to read this story twice, but so I understand - you gave him one of your watches as a trade for a fake skydweller? And you did it To prevent other people from getting scammed? 🤔

So confusing in so many ways. Some replicas are hard to determine via pictures, but this one truly looks like a $100 replica. I did not even need to read the first word before I knew it was going to be about a bad rep.

Yes, agree. This is an obvious replica, the tell tale sign is the coronet.

I just don’t understand why he traded his watch for a replica. It doesn’t make sense to me. He traded a watch in his personal collection to get it off the street and avoid it going to someone else? Seems odd to me.

That, the indices, the text, the rehaut, the fitment of the bezel, and end links to name a few. Sorry OP, while admittedly not a fan of fakes, there is a reason someone gave this away in a home game.

I only wanted to avoid a potential bad issue with my friend, some moron buys it off him for $200 then goes to the pawnshop expecting to get big bucks and gets thrown out then claims Garrett passed the watch off as genuine even though Garrett probably doesn’t know the meaning of “genuine.” Liability is my concern, now I don’t have to worry about it and neither does he. Garrett got a cool watch with a tank on the dial and I got s shiny paperweight that tells time. And why is that a bad thing?

Well done 👍

Good spot and thanks for getting it outta circulation

I don’t follow Rolex so don’t recognize the fakes very well
