The different kinds of leather.

I do not have much personal experience with leather straps, I have one lizard and one alligator leather strap both of unknown origin but that is the extent of my experience. I was curious about the different kinds of leather and of any pros and cons associated with them. Is there one that is objectively beater than an other? Is it more of a brand by brand basis?

Teddy Baldasarre has a great video about this. https://youtu.be/T93UqPew_j4

Only thing I know is that if it's stamped genuine leather that is the lower tier of leather and full grain leather is the upper tier. Also read that calf leather is supposedly the best for straps. Can't confirm or deny this.

Any leather will wear and retain smells badly. They are touchy to clean and scratch looking at them. A nato is easily cleaned and more comfortable while leather being organic breaks down faster. Skin oils absorb into them with limited success getting them out. Soap up a nato and its like the day you got it.

The exotic skins are deemed more dressy, although the embossed grains can be pretty sketchy. "Genuine leather" does not necessarily indicate a solid hide and is possibly reconstituted. Calf , of course, is young cow. I'd assume the benefit is softer and finer grained leather?

I got a good reply or two here.

Definitely a lot to know in the world of leather if you really want to get into it. Delugs is a leather watch strap maker I quite like and they have descriptions into each of the tanneries they get their leather from. Worth a read if you want to learn some of the thought process they used.

Click on any strap of their various “materials“ (babele, chromalex, etc.) and there is some interesting info

I first discovered @Max through his "Haute Ones" YouTube channel with this video describing bracelets and straps. It may fit in well with the other video links being posted here.
