New Islander Diver

Just got an email about this new Islander diver. It is the least expensive Islander automatic diver yet, with an MSRP of $279. It is also the smallest, with a diameter of 39mm. I am not sure how I feel about this one, especially as I believe $279 is pretty steep for a diver with a Miyota 8205 movement in it. What do you think?

I have an 8215 in my Timex Marlin. Seems like an appropriate movement in that price range, IMO. Nice little runners.

It seems like the primary objections to the Miyota 82XX series movements are a perceived wobble and an audible 'zing!' from the one-way-winding rotor. It also seems that a case with sufficient mass tends to obviate both objections. It remains to be seen whether Islander has specified such a case but chances are at least even given how closely Marc Frankel (and team) pay attention to the desires of the watch-nerd community.

I have a few Islanders and like them. I like the green and blue Greenport models a lot but the orange accents is a deal breaker for me. If not for the orange I would have ordered one this morning.

Those look nice

They looks nice, especially the blue one

I’m not a fan of Miyota 8xxx, I ❤️ the Miyota 9xxx variants (even though that also has the rotor wobble). The lack of hacking frustrates me on the 8xxx when you can get better value for and NH movement.

As for #islander I have 5 of Marc’s watches and he delivers. I think the design of this warrants the price even if it has the 8xxx series. Not to mention the final products from Marc hit well above their price point IMHO.

Having said all that I’ll be skipping this (I just bought the Travelers GMT Port Jefferson from Island Watches).

At least some of the current 8xxx movements have hacking (and I can confirm that the one in the Greenport does hack).

Oh had no idea! I had a Zeppelin open heart a while back that didn’t. Thanks for the update 🤝
