I like many different watches, but I am particularly fond of retro Casio digitals, Seiko, Orient divers, many classic Rolex/Tudor designs and especially honest and shameless homages thereof. To me, some designs are so classic, they’re like the Lacoste polo. It is perfectly okay to make a polo, even if you’re not Lacoste (as long as you don’t pretend you’re Lacoste, since not only is that not okay, it’s criminal).
I like watches from my childhood and favorite childhood movies. I don’t invest in watches and very expensive watches are not for me. My “collection” is small and more like a wardrobe; watches will be used and worn.
My favorite watch and daily beater is a Steinhart Ocean GMT, a thoroughly shameless and honest homage.
One of the things that frustrates me the most is when someone claims a watch is finely made or tough but it’s got less than 100m WR. I know that’s my loss but to me going swimming and tolerating being wet are basic requirements for any watch that isn’t very, very cheap and dead charming. It still irks me that my Dan Henry is only 50m and it’s probably the very last time I settle for less WR in a watch that costs more than 100€. A Casio calculator watch can still totally get away with lower WR, but it’s super cheap, dead charming and a calculator to boot! Grrr at so many dress watches with no such excuses! I shall cease rambling now.

Yeah, definitely a commitment for the tracking to make sense. I bought Garmins for myself and my wife but I just could not stick with it. So now my son has mine and is loving it. 😄 My wife is really enjoying hers too and I am back to ”proper“ watches and loving that, so it worked out well enough.

Not sure if Steinhart still counts as a micro. Not sure if Dan Henry does either. I have both and the Steinhart is my favorite watch. The Dan Henry I got won me over with its Top Gun look but I have a hang up about WR less than 100m, so its 50m still annoys me. That’s not the fault of the watch or Dan Henry, it was clearly stated, I just wanted it too much and it’s not let me down.
For me it was about finding both a watch and a brand I liked. With Steinhart and Dan Henry I found both. My recommendation would be to make sure that you like them for what they are and what they can do. I wouldn’t really recommend buying a watch, any watch, only as a substitute for another watch. Micros are meant to get it “just right“ for you. That’s what they are for.

I think if you’re wearing a watch to impress anyone other than watch enthusiasts, you should definitely buy a Rolex. It’s the only brand for that, nothing else even comes close.
If you’re buying it strictly for your own enjoyment then the brand can still matter. A way to clear this up for yourself might be to look at some excellent, honest and shameless homages. If they also tickle your fancy then you’re probably more in love with the design than the brand. Steinhart has some excellent, shameless and honest Rolex homages.
Do you know a lot about the mechanics of watches? I think for a high end luxury Swiss watch to make sense in a mechanical enthusiasm perspective, I think you have to be honest with yourself about whether you appreciate the anachronistic aspect. On some level you have to love the tradition, the history and the exquisite but futile pursuit of precision through obsolete technology. Any Casio digital will beat it in precision and a Grand Seiko will beat it both in precision and the smoothness of the second hand sweep.
I actually take it as a term of endearment for a watch that you use often. My daily beater is my favorite watch. To me, the “daily beater“ is simply the watch worn the most.

If you are open to homages then I can definitely recommend Steinhart. I have had one for years and I basically wear it all the time.
I don’t have any personal experience with San Martin watches, but they might be worth looking into as well. It’s a Chinese brand with both homages and some original designs. I will be getting one, but I can’t really recommend it until I have had it for a while. There’s no shortage of praise of their value for money though.
It is hard to go wrong with a Casio but they’re not “affordable“ in many cases they’re not just genuinely affordable but downright cheap. 😊
