Q: should I get my movement adjusted at watchmaker shop? (Seiko 8R48 chrono movement)

So you've probably seen my previous post about my Pitzmann III automatic chrono, and so far I love it. It's powered by the relatively new Seiko 8R48 automatic chronograph movement used in their new mechanical Speedtimers.

However I have one minor complaint: the regulation on my particular movement is running a little slow, approx -6 sec/day and while its 'within spec' on the Seiko website (+25 to -15 sec/day) this still bugs me as I'd rather have it run slightly fast so its easier to re zero the time after a few days by simply pulling out the crown and pausing the secs hand for a few secs until it corrects.

I'm considering taking the watch to a local watchmaker/repair shop to see if that regulation could be tweaked so its accuracy is more on the plus side instead. Opinions? Should I do this or just leave it alone. 🤔

Wasn't there when I posted.

I've had my LWM adjust a few of mine, but they were all running more than 20 seconds fast. He has them closer to 2-4 seconds a day. One of them is running about -2 seconds a day slow. I'm good with that. Knowing that it's running a bit slow, I set it about 10 seconds ahead. In 5 days it's on time. In 10 days it's 10 seconds behind. Not too bad.

You could do 18 seconds and get a good 6 days of very close time.

Good luck with your decision.

You can do it yourself if you have a steady and gentle touch. QED.

My watch was running slow by about 5 seconds I took the back off and bearly bumped the regulator to the + and I mean bearly and now im 3 seconds fast.

Yeah I have shaky hands and not so much delicate touch, I'll ask a professional to adjust it for me lol

If it bugs you, go for it. In my experience, I've never paid more than $20 or waited more than 20 minutes for a decent watchmaker to dial a seiko movement within a couple of seconds, even on movements less advanced than the 8Rs.

I feel really lucky. My LWM only charges me $5 to adjust my watches.

It's not the amount of inaccuracy that bugs me, a +6/day I'd be totally fine with and I could simply resync the time every several days by pulling out the crown and hacking the secs, but the slightly slow timekeeping means doing exactly what you describe every several days and that is a greater annoyance

·

So I found a local watch repair shop who did the regulation adjustment for $30, checked everything on a time Grapher and tested the adjusted accuracy in mult positions, says the new accuracy falls in the 0 to +2 sec range, will check it myself over the next few days and regular wear 👍🏽

·

Doesn't really address the issue, but thanks

·

Took a quick shot of the movement while the case was open

If still under warranty I wouldn't open it at all. -6 is within tolerance and definitely acceptable.

The last time I needed a seiko tweaked I didn’t even get charged for it. There’s something lovely about the community that exists around that brand—buyers and dealers alike

So after doing some 24 hr testing, my watch now gains +4 sec/ day in real world wearing conditions, quite satisfied 👍🏽

If it is within tolerance then best leave it well alone.

Watches are sometimes a bit like wives. If they are working correctly and happy, sometiemes good enough is perfect.

Already had it adjusted, I'm satisfied now
