Things a watch does better!

So a lot of people think of a mechanical watch, as being of no real practical value. Just something to look nice.

I live in Thailand, am currently in Germany, and work in NZ. I often care about 3 times zones. At a glance, I can see it's 6:22 locally, 4:22 AM in NZ (the odd numbers on the inside of the crystal), and 11:22 PM in Thailand (bezel).

No other tool I know of can do this at a glance. Not a smartwatch, not my phone, nothing.

Can you think of other ways a watch is more than jewelry?

Navigation is important. The sun in daytime and north star at nite gives you compass bearings. Timing sound against light gives you distance in weather and war. Time zones should really be by zulu time. At noon with charts and a sextant you tell where you are with accuracy. But whatever. Just look at your phone.

I can not look at my phone and tell the time, in three time zones, in 2 seconds.

That's why I got a refurbished Glycine Airman GMT. Although I travel with a Casio having the world time function (my beloved's is a Royale, mine is a round version) as one button cycles between four time zones and two buttons set one of these four to the main time.

Not mechanical, yet an example of how a purpose built tool (a watch) is better than a generic tool (a smartphone) for certain tasks.

No offense, but you are overselling this a bit.

It took about 2 seconds.

I have to pull the phone out of my pocket, unlock my phone, find the clock app, and then tap on "world". That's more work than glancing at my wrist.

I am not saying it's not easy on a phone. It's just cool that the easiest way is with a watch.

Not sure why I am getting so much heat for talking about something positive about a watch, on a watch forum... but ok.

I renamed the thread. Maybe that was the problem.

I want to make the joke about telling the time in London, Paris, Monaco, and Gstaad but instead I'll switch over to the tan line function. A watch will assess how discolored the sun is making your skin.

Not really try to give you heat. I toned down my usual snark. You are exactly the sort of person that a GMT is designed for and it is a beautiful watch. Here is my old school desk clock:

That’s three time zones at a glance, but nothing adding an hour or two wouldn’t do.

I have three clocks on my wall as well, so while at my desk, it's less useful. The only thing that I thought was interesting, and why I made this thread, is the GMT was created in the 1950s. Here we are 70 years later, with unbelievable advancements in technology and conveniences compared to back then, and a better "on the go, at a glance" multiple time zone tool has not been created.

One of my favourite things to do when the inevitable 'ugh your phone tells time better' comes up whenever you say you are into watches:

Say 'ok'

Chuck your g shock at a wall

Then say

'Should we do that with your phone?'

Also works at the pool

The "chuck your watch at a wall" test does not work for all watches.

Wait, you don't carry a Gshock with you at all times?

thats one sexy watch there. All i can do is spin my watch to the inside.

GS makes the best macro watch porn. Slender hands that go all the way up to those shadows. I can look past the date window to that cool little power reserve.

·

As much as I hate to admit it…

I can read over and over all about using GMTs and how tracking time zones work etc. but in 5 min after posting this and looking at another one, pretending to set it/track 3 new time zones  myself, id be so lost again lol

This is all a knock on me and not GMTs lol.

·

OP - that is a lovely watch, and you make a good argument for your use case.

·

This is great! Am I misreading the bezel time. The GMT hand seems to be pointing to 21:00 (9:00PM) not 23:00?

I was hoping no one would have seen that :). I had just purchased this watch a few hours before this post, and an hour after, I realized it was set incorrectly. :)

Sorry about that :) I was just wanting to make sure I understood how to read these things. I don't own a GMT but your post is making it tempting.

  1.  Style. It looks good.
  2.  Quicker/easier for me than digging out my phone from my pocket. Quick half second glance.
  3.  Plus it's a cool gadget to play with. Lets be honest lol
  4.  I had a super hot girl look at mine and say a gentleman should always have a nice timepiece. That alone was enough for me haha!

Oh btw very nice watch!!! 🔥🔥

Thanks! I have also been using it for more than 3 time zones. If you know the hour's delta ahead or behind of the time zone you want to track, you can just put that number on 12 with a quick rotation of the bezel, and then read the GMT hand. You can of course do the math in your head as well, but this is more fun :)

It's a steelman argument issue. We all fear those moments where we need to defend our hobby to the great unwashed, and in that kind of situation the "look ma, three timezones!" argument is simply not going to cut it. So, people come to this thread in the hope of a solution to their conundrum, and then feel let down.

lol, well now that I have been using the watch for a few weeks, and I actually need it for more than 3 time zones, I can say it's a lot better than any other tool I have for this use. Two reasons:

1. I am usually on my phone in a meeting, when I want to know.

2. Once you get used to it, it's super fast. I use the color coding as much as the numbers, to know when my team is about to wake up or leave the office

3. while math works as well, as long as you know the delta in hours from your local time zone, it's pretty easy to just spin the bezel to that set number, and then look at the GMT hand.

So, super happy with the watch, for my use case. If you don't need to know about more then 2 time zones on a daily basis, then it's pointless.
