I think I like the term ‘goal watch’ you mentioned in one of your replies. I think these would be the ‘grails’ many people mentioned that the save up and work hard for but are rasonably obtainable. I think proper grails are ones that you are unlikely to every be able to find or afford for more than a decade.
Nice discussion thread. Really interesting to see different peoples thoughts on the matter. I must admit it got me thinking about what I would actually consider as a holy grail (the unobtainable)
I have many watches that I consider a ‘grail’ many of them are that because they are out of my price range or hard to get because there isn’t a AD nearby. I do have a soft spot for JLC and Omega so there are several of those that I consider potential grails, there are also a couple of Longines (recently picked up one) and Federique Constant (especially the Monolithic) that sit in the ‘grail’ category. I think it is a bit of a flexible term too especially if you get the opportunity to try on a grail and realise that it is either not a good fit or style for you. I think many of us have at least two category of grails, those that are just out of reach right now but we could potentially attain in the future (ultimate grails for me), and those that are so close to impossible unless we win the lottery (holy grails).
For me:
Ultimate Grails: Omega speedy Apollo 8 Dark side of the moon or 50th anniversary silver snoopy, JLC Master Ultra-thin perpetual calendar in rose or white gold.
Holy Grails: Omega De Ville Tourbillon (especially the original release), JLC Hybris Mechanica Calibre 185, Grand Seiko Kodo
