Negotiating Watch Prices?

Does anyone have any tips on negotiating prices with an AD? I am looking to buy an entry level luxury watch and wanted to see how people go about getting the best price. Also looking to build a relationship with the AD for future purchases. Any advice?

Research, take prices elsewhere with you, you should be able to get between 10/20% off RRP in store, tell the AD you want to come back in 6 months to a year and buy your second watch, be nice, be funny, tell stories, tell jokes, GOOD LUCK 🤞🏼

Don’t be afraid to ask, there’s only two outcomes!

And any discount is a +ve 👍🏻

I don’t think you’d have much luck getting a discount on a new Tudor. Longines and Grand Seiko probably more of a chance yes. I have dealt with Topper Jewelers and Exquisite Timepieces. Joe at Topper is great they do trade ins too they offer fair prices. Most ADs expect some sort of price negotiation so I just straight up ask if they can offer any kind of discount. So far, I have been able negotiate 20-30% off. Shop around see who can give you the best deal. Some out of state ADs won’t charge sales tax depending where you are. ADs seem more willing to haggle when they have the watch you want in stock versus special order.

In Malaysia, you ask outright: what discount can you offer? When I bought my Tag Aquaracer the Tag store said 10 percent, another authorised dealer said 20 percent. After that, I said, okay, but what's best price you can offer me? The sales officer consulted his manager and knocked a bit more off the price. Then I said yes. Don't be afraid to ask!

I also got nearly 20 percent off my GS spring drive by asking for the discount. I'd have felt a real chump if I hadn't and paid full price!

Know what you are buying and what the market deems its value. Some brands you are not going to get a discount. Others, you will. Check out the grey dealer prices (Jomashop is a good barometer). I will not pay more than they grey market price on anything, so that is always my starting negotiation point. Some tips once you determined you are going to negotiate:

  • Once you know your price, let the SA know you are a serious buyer and you hope to buy the piece today.

  • Let them know you have researched it and see that it is selling at X price at the following places.

  • You are not looking for them to necessarily undercut the lowest price, but your offer is fair based on what competitors are selling it at.

  • They will likely have to check to see if they can sell it and will come back with a yes or no. If they come back with yes, you better buy the item. No one likes to enter into negations and have one party back out. That is a sure fire way to lose any future business with that AD.

Watch charts is a good place to start. Listing of current prices for many pieces.

Well, I was going to comment but you pretty much covered it all....

·

I started off buying pre-owned. Discount built in.

The best policy is to ask outright. Either way, you have to pay to play! 🤷🏽‍♂️🥂🍾😜

Well my personal experience is that I went to an AD. Told them exact watch I was looking for, and contemplated on getting it (without knowing we were beyond closing time). Manager said she won’t charge me tax and I walked out with my first luxury watch (Omega Aqua Terra in green)

As mentioned several times, don’t be afraid to ask. If I’m with my wife she’ll always ask for a military discount ☺️. At my AD I’ll always ask for something similar to gray market prices, except for Rolex of course. I’m bidding my time though, I think the day will soon come when I can ask for a discount on a Rolex.

The AD doesn't own the store, so keep in mind what their motivations are. They work on commission, and they need to have sales on the board. A sale is a win for them. This is all to say they want to close the deal, a discounted sale is (in many cases) better than no sale at all. So take this into consideration and don't be afraid to ask.

·

Just ask. Say something along the lines of, “I love this watch but it’s a little out of my price range, can you offer me a 15% discount”

·

If it’s sat in the window you should be getting a discount. Don’t believe the dealer BS. Walk if they don’t play ball. It’s almost end of Q3 2023 and things are getting worse and worse for dealers.

I just ask straight away in random ADs if they offer discounts and sometimes it kind of works. If you've got an established relationship with an AD this makes things a lot easier as you know what to expect from the get go.
