Brands That Use Repurposed Materials With Sentimental Value

I’ve recently been cruising Instagram, and a watch brand that I had never heard of popped up on my feed, and they caught my attention with their unique watch designs.

This brand, William Wood Watches, makes some attractive watches, but that wasn’t really what I wanted to talk about.  One of their main goals is to incorporate actual firefighting equipment into their watches by recycling the materials.

So not going to lie, I absolutely love stuff like this. Maybe not necessarily firefighting specifically, I don’t know any firefighters nor have had any experiences with any, but I could easily see myself buying a watch like this that did have some significant materials put into it.

Does anyone else know of any other watch brands that use materials this way?  I‘m pretty sure I’ve seen a brand that uses materials from boats to make watch cases.

I would really like to find more brands that do stuff like this—I don’t find it too gimmicky as long as the prices aren’t too inflated.  At the end of the day though, you do have to realize that you are not paying for the “watch” when you buy a watch like this, so the prices are going to be higher than similar watches from other brands.  In the case of the firefighter watches, I think some of them are overpriced, and other models are absolutely within what I would expect, so they get a thumbs up from me, but I want to know about other brands That you might have heard of.

Idk about other brands, there's one that uses pieces of the Concord, kinda cool. I really like WWW designs. And that helmet? So good!

Very cool idea, and it looks great!  Luminox use recycled ocean recovered plastics in their bezels, cases and straps.  Now I'm going to look for the brand that utilises Concorde components!  Found it, it's Bremont :)

I met the young owner of William Woods at The Chicago Wind Up watch fair.  He is the grandson of a fire chief.  The watches are first rate and fun.  They incorporate fire hose into the straps and have a display crystal watch back that instructs you to break the glass in case of fire.  Just a great small brand.

These guys make watches using parts from special collector cars and bikes, such as Carol Shelbys 1968 Shelby GT500 Prototype "Green Hornet".

Yes - that is exactly where I was going to go.

I saw the William Wood Watches, but couldn't get excited enough about them to buy one.

However, REC Watches definitely caught fire with me. I picked up the P-51 Green Hornet, the RNR Arkonik, and my favorite the TTT Great Escape (made from parts from the original motorcycle that Steve McQueen rode in the movie The Great Escape).

Stuff like this always makes me think of Onassis and his yacht where the bar stools were upholstered in whale foreskin. The entire point seems to be exposing the content to others as some sort of party trick. I don't get it. Much like my years at Harvard, you can just say it's so and the effect is no different. I guess I'm to practical for this market as my reaction i s always "Why?"

That’s really good to know!  So many small brands you can’t be sure if their stories are genuine. Great to hear!

You said it yourself, you’re too practical—which is the exact opposite of what an item like this is, it’s sentimental and plays to our emotions.

Oh yeah! Now that’s what I’m talking about!  I can’t say I’m into rockets or space travel, but this would be a perfect watch for that type of person I’m sure.
