Mine was a fashion watch, but i bought 3 of the damn things before getting wise and realising how much more you can get for your money. My first proper watch, an automatic, was the Seiko SRP629K1
It's a simple little thing. What i dislike the most about it, is that the crystal is raised, so the edge sticks up above the bezel, making it prone to chips (it has a few!). It's just a knock around watch these days.
My current #1, my most worn watch which has become a cornerstone in the collection, is the Helm Vanuatu (currenly on the SS2 bracelet, which is normally on their Khuraburi Model).
I haven't done it myself, i'm too ham-fisted and clumsy, and i know i'll cut it too short or too long or set on fire, or something like that. I just use the "Downunder" technique if i don't like the bulk
