I need help! Lol. First time watch build.

So here’s the short of it.

I need help finding a case that will take a 31mm dial on a nh35 setup for the 4 o’clock stem position.

Here’s the long of it.

I was buying parts to put together my first watch and I bought a nh35 movement and a case, dial, and hands that said they were compatible with the nh35.

So I got them all in the mail today and got to work. I affixed the dial to the movement. I put the hands on for the first time. (Took 2 seconds hands lol) and I was getting ready to cut the stem when I realized I couldn’t put the movement with the dial into the case.

That’s when it hit me like a ton of bricks. The dial can be compatible with the movement but that doesn’t mean it’s compatible with the case. I had just been thinking “well if they are all nh35 compatible they should fit like a glove.”I now know the dial needs to be 28.5mm to fit into the case.

what im wondering is if anyone knows of a case that will accept a 31mm dial on a nh35 set for the 4 o’clock crown? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

You’d probably be better off picking a different dial.

That’s what I was thinking. I can always try to use the dial with adhesive on another build.

If you had a little more experience, I would suggest dial dots or replacing the dial feet, but the way things are, I would buy a 28.5mm dial and keep the current one for a future build.

P.S.: Oddly enough, I have a case on the way for a 31mm dial, but unfortunately for a 3 o'clock crown position.

Yeah I’ve got another dial on the way and I’ve learned my lesson. On the bright side I’ve found a dial I like more and I’m changing the build slightly to something I think will accompany the case better.

That’s a nice case and butterfly clasp you’ve got coming. AliExpress is a watch builder’s dream. :)

Yes, you will spend a decent amount of time browsing AliExpress. Unfortunately, there are also a certain number of duds in their inventory, especially as dials and cases are concerned. Sometimes it's worth the money to spend $100 on the dial alone, or $200 on the case. But, all in good time.

The case I ordered just arrived, and it was relatively high-quality, yet quite quirky. It had a removable front, back, and center piece, with six screws (with two gaskets each), holding the whole thing together.

But I do like these oddballs. 😉

I like your choice of dial…in fact it looks exactly like the one I can’t use anymore lol. What are the odds?

I like that case you picked. Seems like it has pocket watch elements fused with a wristwatch. You are gonna have a nice watch on your hands.

So I decided to make it a bit of a fun watch, rather than classy. I wanted all the elements to compliment each other and I found a dial that I fell in love with.

I really like samurai and I felt like this dial is artsy and tastefully done at the same time. The indices on the dial are polished metal just like the swirl dial so the hands should compliment those nicely. All in all Should be a fun piece when it’s all together. I can’t wait 😬

Well, that is not that much of a surprise as it might seem. Non-standard dial sizes for NH35 movements fall into certain categories at AliExpress, and once you deviate for the 28.5mm dials, you really have to look closely at the offering, and only a few combinations of dial, watch hands and case will actually work.

This can be even trickier business, if the case was made to fit the NH35 with a plastic brace, which can be of rather doubtful quality. (The case I just received was of great quality, somewhat odd to assemble, but the end product was great.) A similar dynamic can be found with watch hands, meaning that the specs can be wrong, and the standard 12.5mm lengths are listed, even though minute or second hands are actually longer. With a little practice you can spot the usual suspects.

In either case (No pun intended!), your new selection should not run into the same issues.
