G-Shock, this time is gee nope 🫤

Last week, when I was feeling like I may need a stress leave from my job (which I can’t do since we’re too short staffed) , I received an email from Gshock Canada:

For 24 hours, I could get 29% off, in honor of ..Leap Day !

When you’re in a bad spot, a bit of watch buying might put you right? Right?!

Image

No Mariana Trench William giving candy or watches for the cries of children (I’ll provide link below if you’re new to leap day), just 700 bucks off a pricey carbon gshock that looks interesting, and a crazy cheap GShock 2100xx with Bluetooth.

Never owned a G despite always being G curious (refraining from G jokes of all sorts here) so this sale seemed a great chance to try out a few.

A 30 day EZ return policy made it feel pretty risk free.

Quick delivery and I’m trying on my first G Shocks yesterday!

#1 2100 in white.

Looks nice enough, and Bluetooth to phone makes setting everything convenient… but didn’t dig the way too long strap (6 inch wrist me) and the plasticy look and feel.

Just my $0.02, it actually looks pretty good despite my critique. despite being only $156 CAD, it’s going to go back.

Now on to..

Image

#2 “supernova big bang universe formation, in carbon. I love lightweight, and I love comfy non temperature conducting feel of carbon or ceramic or Ti (riding bike to work in -5, light thermally inactive watch is so nice! ). And, I like bright and bold.

Additionally, I was in the mindset of ‘we all return to dust in the universe, at some point’ so this watch fit that idea nicely.

Feels.. weirdly light. Which I like! Looks, well…it’s complicated.

Maybe high end? Maybe kind of plasticky? The MOP flecks in resin are cool.. but so small and hard to see.

It’s high quality, high tech carbon ..

… but it just doesn’t look as great on me as I’d hoped, and maybe plastic at a glance.

And despite the case fitting my tiny wrist nicely, its small dark screen feels much harder to read than my other bold 3 hand divers. ⬇ Ti on rubber: good in the cold 👍

Image

It’s all so subjective - but I just didn’t think I’d gel with it long term. So it’s headed back as well.

Not sure what I want these days..

So keeping the powder dry for another day.

BTW : None of the above is meant to be critical of the brand on the whole, I think amazing materials science (they make watches from carbon and polished hardened titanium, in Japan, at amazing prices relative to other companies) and bomb proof watches, but at least these 2 didn’t click for me.

Nice post.

Good luck with work! 😃

Hang in there Doc. Real heroes don’t wear capes.

Hope work gets better. You’ll find the right watch for you or it’ll find you.

That is a beautiful G-Shock. Looks cosmic—nebulous.

That strap is definitely too long. I bought a 2100 with a metal case and plastic strap, which works fine for me and is the best of both worlds. The square would be too pricey for me, to be honest. A good move to return both, you seemed to have successfully distinguished between feeling a void and really digging a watch. Get some good night sleep, meet some nice people, enjoy going outdoors and have a nice meal. This combination seems to cure almost all negative feelings for me😉

I bought a GA-B2100.... it has left me underwhelmed.

I think that, just as with cheap Seikos, people pump up G-Shocks online to appear more in touch with the common man, and to fit in with the groupthink. They are serviceable watches, but nothing special.

At least you gave them a go, and realized those models weren't for you.

Being a huge g shock fan, I have taken a break from them. Used to own 5 but now just one

The Casioak as much as it was hyped, left me underwhelmed. So now I'm happy with my one and only 👍

You made the right call with the returns. Anybody that is clever enough to post 30 Rock references on this app is fine by me. Keep crankin along!

Some watches improve in person vs online pics, but that scenario was reversed for me this time!

Yup - Ticking most of those boxes this weekend 🙂

And one of the other mid tier Gs might yet be a keeper? Will continue to keep an eye out, but it re affirms my desire to try on b4 committing !
