As a kid, I was interested in my Dad's watches. Although I purchased a used Datejust in my 20's, I didn't really get into watches until around 2016, when I bought a replacement for that watch and began to learn about them online and elsewhere.
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
A plastic Swatch? My first real watch was a my Dad's Tudor he gave to me after I expressed interest and he wasn't wearing it anymore.
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
When my son was about 3, he picked up my Rolex Datejust and chucked it over the second story railing in our house onto a hard tile floor. The watch was totally unscathed and continued running perfectly after this misadventure. It gave me new respect for the durability of certain watches.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
Learn as much as your can from as many sources as possible, focus on quality not quantity, and buy what you like--not what others like.
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
I think my favorite brand is A. Lange & Shone. I love the German aesthetic and incredible attention to detail. I'm also interested in cheaper watches. My latest acquisition is a Casio F91W for less than $20 on Amazon.
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
Not sure at this point. Maybe a Tudor Black Bay 54?
I was fortunate enough to acquire the watch of my dreams. When I first held a Lange Datograph Up/Down, I was thinking there is no way I will ever own this.
