Good morning, everyone. I'd like to introduce you to this vintage 1977 Seiko 5 Ref. 98233 with a 7009 movement. It's a 47-year-old Seiko 5, a cherished heirloom passed down from my late father. We thought it was lost for a while, but my mom recently found it and sent it to me. This timepiece holds immense sentimental value, as it's the very watch that ignited my passion for horology. My father wore it faithfully every single day for nearly 40 years, and as you can see, it bears the marks of those years of use. The metal bracelet is heavily stretched and no longer usable, so I removed it. However, the watch still runs perfectly and hasn't missed a beat. You'll notice that the hands have lost their lume, and the "5" logo is missing from the watch face. I'm interested in hearing your opinions. Should I restore the logo and lume, consider changing the hands altogether, or leave everything in its original state?

I’d like to have that 5 repositioned and lume on the hands, if feasible. But surely wouldn’t polish it or try to cancel dents and marks!

Yeah. Everything will stay as is. Logo and hands do bother me little bit.

yeah the lack of which makes it look a little damaged, not just worn. once you put all the pieces back there, its gonna look amazing!
Only thing I would consider is getting the logo fixed. Do wonder where it went... It's a nice looking vintage watch with great sentimental value, so it would be nice if you felt comfortable wearing it. I have a couple of vintage watches and the lume always degrades, it is a given and part of the charm I think.

It's a relatively straightforward task to replace the 5 logo... if you have a spare. I may do somewhere.
Personally I'd either refurb the whole thing or leave it (except the logo). I think just reluming the hands could make it look a bit odd.
I'd also suspect that it's a 7009. Have you got a picture of the caseback?

Thank you for the info. I do and it is 7008 for sure. I just don’t have the image now on my phone. I just don’t have a spare logo.

As far as I know Seiko never made a 7008. The 7009 printed on the caseback can look a LOT like 7008 though?
