Unpopular opinion: Most Casios are damn ugly

Don't get me wrong. I love Casio. Nothing else is as reliable, affordable and feature rich all in one package. And they have a few absolute bangers.

But out of the thousands of models they make, almost everything is either really ugly, really uncomfortable or really disappointing. Or all of the above.

The designs are either too simple or too complicated. With almost nothing finding a balance.

Bad choice of colors on far too many models. It's often either incredibly dull with no color, or insanely colored with no sense at all.

Stupid fake screws on the front.

Seemingly designed by throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks. Rather than actually asking customers what they like.

And don't get me started on the comfort issues and stupid non-standard lugs that many of them use for no reason. It varies a lot but it certainly ruins a lot of watches.

Basically the issue is there's so much randomness that they never reach perfection. They have the power and instead of focusing they are dispersing it.

That's why almost any decent micro brand has designs that are way nicer looking even though they probably have just one guy doing all the design. (Whereas Casio probably have a couple of floors in their buildings just for the design teams.)

They are getting better now I think. As you can see in my last post they released a few really nice dress watches a little while ago.

For photos I picked a few at random. These are certainly not the ugliest ones they make though.

Scroll sideways above to see more photos. And there's a bunch of screenshots below as well.

I didn't focus on the g shocks because those are maybe supposed to be kinda ugly.

By offering many models they cast a wide net to attract buyers and let the unpopular ones die out. In the car industry they have a saying "there is a butt for every seat". They own the budget market and most every one of us has at least a couple.

Yeah that's correct but that's my point. They have the power to get great but there's no real communication with their customers.

And this method makes browsing their website totally overwhelming. Both for customers and watch store owners.

I've never seen a really good selection of Casios in local stores. And because of that all my local stores have barely sold any in the past couple years. Same poorly chosen ones just sitting there collecting dust.

As I say when I when thin a tee shot but it ends up 250 yards down the center cut on a fairway, “ugly but effective”.

I just did a post about what watch brand could you wear for a lifetime. The Casio and Seiko Fan Boys show up strong for their brand. Much respect guys. If your going to talk blasphemy about Casio. You better be sleeping with one eye open from now on.😂

Nice. I love baseball.

Yes most designs ugly but then a few absolute belters!

I agree that many Casio models have faces that only the most affectionate of mothers could love, but these two ain't any of those!

I actually quite like the look of the one with the Roman numerals 🤫

I feel that you don't identify with the Asian market.

Yeah it's not that they are horrible. Just so far from what they could be with a tiny bit of effort from Casio.

I'm not sure I understand.

Do you mean that these models are more popular in Asia?

This is my guess.

This is my guess.

Yeah it's possible. I'm not sure where their biggest market is.

Not trying to be a contrarian, but there's an exception to every rule. 😉

Not much difference between this Casio MTD-1053D and the Longines Hydroconquest really, apart from the terrifying price of the latter.

Yeah that's very nice

The Casio Edifice EFV-100 is one of the greatest, best looking watches of this century, previous centuries, and all of time itself, in this and every known universe (including the planet Zendar). I paid $65 for mine.

I can absolutely side with you here. I feel that the more streamlined and subdued designs from Casio and Edifice are the ones I'm drawn to the most.
