Favourite Talking Watches

I’m sure most of us have seen some/all of Hodinkee’s Talking Watches series. There are some really cool episodes on there - it’s not always about the watches but the stories are a mixture of inspiration, envy, joy and passion imo.

My own personal favourite is the Roni Madhvani episode - such a focused collector!

John Goldberger is the GOAT. Honourable mention to the recent Greg Selch episode.

Is JM the Go-To-Guy for musicians/film stars when they want to learn/buy a watch? They all seem to reference him! RC was VERY funny! There’s a couple of episodes where you see the guest let out a sigh of relief when the presenter will say that their watch is genuine - that always makes me laugh!

I really enjoyed Brooke Shield’s episode. The story about how she practically got a rolex thrown at her was so intriguing. Also Alton Brown! His story about his dad’s watch was insane!

It goes to show how much regard/value in GMT’s have changed! I can’t imagine anyone throwing a GMT into a taxi anymore!

The AB story is one of those that makes me believe in miracles. Hope Wei Koh’s Rolex found its way back to him too

Daniel Dae Kim, Brook Shields or the second John Mayer one. Would love to see one where Ed Sheeran shows his collection not just talking about it.

I couldn’t see who the Ultraman Speedy was really aimed at when it first came out. It went over my head. DDK it would seem!

It does give us another opportunity to see ES on Hodinkee, right?? I wonder if anyone at the recent BRITS, asked him if he had his strap changing tools on him….😂

I actually knew nothing about Ultraman, and still don't really. But I do think that design is pretty good and not too over the top. I'd like to see Stallone's collection as well cause he has some crazy pieces.

Ooooh - that’s a another thread, surely?? ‘Who would you want to see on Talking Watches?’!

Stallone’s gold Sub was in the A Man & His Watch book. A very humbling story indeed

Mario Andretti because I am a huge racing fan.  Fred Savage was a close second since I was raised on the Wonder Years and Princess Bride.  haha.

It would have been so easy for MA to chuck all his watches (from winning) in a drawer somewhere and be lost to time but it speaks volumes about his character that he cherishes them. I loved how ‘wide-eyed’ FS was, by having Ben in his house and getting sat next to Morgan King! He’s one of us!

Fred Savage seems like he would ask you about your watch if you ever met him in person.

Hodinkee could claim to have inspired a generation of watch collecting/study with the help of social media/internet. JG done it for decades WITHOUT the internet!

Also, THAT knife from the video has got to be getting near ‘Newman’ money now….

I have enjoyed them all. I think DDK and Ronny Chieng are right behind Mr. John C. Mayer in terms of favorites. 🤙

It‘s amazing to think no one else thought of doing it and now they all have a variation on the theme….
