I'm not ready yet to lead a raid into Mordor but this should help.

There's plenty for me to like about my Marathon Arctic MSAR and of of these is it's total disregard for fashion. The MSAR is a watch that completely abandoned any pretenses at being pretty on the wrist. There are absolutely no chances that I'll ever be referred to as "that guy over there with the Rolex" when I'm wearing it.

When Marathon made it they had some very clear ideas about what they wanted to achieve. The case is shaped in a way that it can't catch or snag on a battle harness and is curved to lead the fingers to where they are supposed to go, like the diamond patterned massive crown and the no less massive cog wheel like bezel. I could deep my hands in a barrel of grease and still be able to operate the MSAR.

The MSAR dial is an engineering feat all by itself. It manage to remain legible under all angles or light conditions despite it's diminutive size. This is partly achieved with the ever glowing tritium tubes and partly because the dial and handset are laid out so well. Never mind the reason, the MSAR is a watch that can tell the time at a glance even to the most sleep deprived or stressed user.

It's built to last. There is nothing delicate or flimsy there and the case back text is proof enough that this watch is a proper military watch. Which is where the problem really is because a soldier doing real soldiering have to be a bit soft in the head to wear an expensive mechanical when a G-Shock will cost a fraction of the price and be just as good for the job if not better. Despite its qualities the MSAR doesn't really have a place anymore on the battlefield.

For which I'm very grateful that it wears fantastically well on my wrist and therefore I don't have to re-enlist to justify owning or wearing it.

My arctic GSAR has been holding for almost a year now as my default daily wear. It doesn't try even for a second to be anything but utilitarian, and I enjoy that. There are more expensive watches that I could see myself owning one day, but I think I'd find myself often missing the tritium, insanely easy to use bezel and crown, and almost complete absence of stylistic flare, as if it doesn't even comprehend why style would ever be a concern.

You had me at the LOTR reference. Frodo and Sam might have been spared their harrowing journey if Gandalf had called on the eagles to fly them there earlier. At least then they wouldn’t need a real SAR from off the side of Mount Doom. 🤣

There wouldn't be a lot of a story to write if Air Eagle was willing to take on passengers from the shire.

I love this watch. And it's at the top of my "next watch" list.

That MSAR is awesome. I like watches with deep cases great wrist presence and tritium tubes, this Marathon is a fine example. Congratulations.

I bet you could use it a last line of defense weapon if necessary. It looks like it could crack open a human skull☠️

Is it as heavy as it looks?

It's not a light watch. Sized to my 16.5cm wrist it weights 133gr, which surprisingly is still lighter than my Islander ISL68.

I love tooly watches. I would be feeling my GSAR all day if I owned one. L

I’m uncertain about the long-term with it, but it would be nice to have a Ball GMT. That tritium seems like it would be really handy. Would love to try on a Hydrocarbon AeroGMT 2.
