Trouble Deciding

Im looking at these two watches, and which I’d like to get more. there are a few things I’m debating. first is the seiko feels like a more practical choice as a whole. and I’m a huge flieger fiend. the reason against it is I’ve got my Berny v2 compressor as my daily right now. which as a whole has better specs (albeit zero originalit). the downside to the Berny being that when it comes time where the movement starts to go. it might just be cheaper to replace the watch as a whole. where the seiko I could at the best get it service, and at the worst get the movement replaced.

the Gotham watch is something I have wanted for a while now. more specifically a Montgomery dial wicket watch. the reason I choose this over a used vintage is simply because i get anxious playing the eBay lottery. the Gotham is definitely the more interesting choice. the biggest issue is the practicality. basically my pockets are usually pretty full. so not much room for it. I can get a leather belt attachable case for it (for an extra 50$ from Etsy). but the other issue with it is it’s harder to access at a glance. with a wristwatch I can just turn my wrist to see the time. a pocket watch has to be pulled out of a pocket or case. which can sometimes be more difficult with hands full.

sorry for the long rant but I thought getting some extra brains in on this might help make up my mind. thanks everyone, and cheers

UPDATE:

turns out I might be able to have me cake, and eat it too 😁

If you wear blue jeans the little pocket on the right hand side fits most pocket watches. That is what it is there for.

Well that pocket watch was a curve ball!

I don't know much about Gotham or pocket watches in general, but I assume you have to dress a certain way (Like a Sir!) to wear a pocket watch.

As for the Seiko -- I have the all-black version and can share my critique of the watch.

Image
  1. The mesh bracelet looks nice and feels hefty, but it's not very flexible and it gets uncomfortable during active wear. The clasp is just mediocre. Fortunately the lugs are drilled and it's easy to swap out.
  2. After a few weeks, I noticed a silver speck under the crystal. Fortunately it was under warranty and the Seiko AD removed it for free.

Overall it's a decent, affordable field watch with flieger-inspired vibes. The hands are super legible and generously lumed. The bracelet is really the worst part, so I just wear it on a comfy leather strap. The movement is basic but highly serviceable and covers the practical essentials (hacking, hand winding, quickset day/date, nearly 40h power reserve, 100m water resistance). The 39mm case size wears pleasantly small on the wrist. Finally if you get the polished stainless steel version it can look dressier and pass for a sports watch.

Also a question. how is the fit on it  I’ve got roughly a 7&half inch wrist. how to you think it would fit with the lug shape and lug to lug lengt?

I don't know much about Gotham

I believe the original Gotham watch company was based in New York (shocking!). They imported Swiss movements and cased them locally. That company went out of business. The current company acquired the rights to the name. All of their watches are made in China. My sense is that their products are relatively decent quality, or at least better than what you might find on Ali Express.

On my 6.25" wrist it wears just right. But I have a friend with a wrist north of 7" and it wears small for him. It's really more field watch than flieger.

From your update it looks like you got a pretty good deal and I'm curious how this turned out for you.
