My first mechanical watch and changes in size over time

I’ve worn G Shocks since I was a kid but I was never really into watches. 6-7 years ago everyone I knew started wearing Apple Watches so I got one and it just didn’t do much for me. Having been a Marine I heard about Sangin and thought the Atlas was cool and I was lucky enough to get one.

I didn’t know about watch sizes and I didn’t care, but I have a 6 inch wrist and this thing is 42mm lol. I kind of fell in love with the Sangin and I became really interested in watches, so that watch started it all for me. I soon realized I might want to consider smaller watches after learning more.

Next was the SUF 180 at 38.5mm. I thought it was absolutely perfect for me and I still love it today, but I wanted to go smaller.

The Nomos at 37mm seemed even more perfect, and I don’t mind the long lugs, but I needed to go smaller.

Then I got this Tank small even though I never wear formal attire and I loved how small it was, but it obviously just isn’t the most practical watch.

My most recent watch is the Lorier Astra at 36mm and I don’t think I’ve ever worn a better fitting watch. For whatever reason though I am regaining interest in watches that might be borderline too big but perhaps acceptable.

I don’t know why I’m posting this lol just some self reflection on how I’m never satisfied with how watches fit me and I’m always looking for something different even if I have watches that I do love very much. Thanks for reading this pointless post 😁

The way our collecting journeys zig and zag over features, styles and sizes is quite interesting and unique to each collector. Thanks for sharing your perspective - I find such content interesting and sure many others do as well.

Man that tank looks great on you! 6.5in wrist here, I used to buy between 39-42mm. These days, the highest I’ll go is 38. Congrats!

That SUF looks fabulous.... dashes to Google

·

My sweet spot is 38-40 mm but I've got watches from 36 all the way to 48 mm, I would love to add a Nomos to my collection.

Glad you posted this, because most of us probably go through similar size progressions and experience similar thoughts over time. I’m just glad a lot of manufacturers are offering many smaller options as opposed to the discuses so prevalent over the past 10-20 years

fire emoji for the Lorier, AND that amazing keyboard!

·

Next is the Traska commuter 34 mm and finally the 32mm Praesidus A-11

·

Totally have gone through the same thing, used to think 42mm was normal, then 38mm, now my smallest is a 34mm. It's a shame the industry still calls small watches "women's" watches

Interesting story

·

Love the cartier tank, all of my most comfortable watches are rectangular

Thank you! I also find these kinds of things interesting but it seems like others are much better at writing out an interesting story lol.

Thank you! Sounds like we have had similar experiences 😀

Thanks! There's just something about it that does it for me. I also really like Stepan Sarpaneva as a watchmaker and since I'll never be able to afford his "actual" watches this'll have to do. Plus they sent a load of cool stuff along with the watch.

I just love Nomos and the whole long lugs thing is, to me, really not as much of an issue as everyone seems to think. I hope you will be able to!

Thanks! I am happy about the smaller options as well. I almost want to hold off on getting anything new for a couple years just to see if smaller watches come back really hard. Also, love your profile picture lol

Honestly I have absolutely looked at both as options lol

It really is terrible! Especially when I go to one of the local watch stores and want to see smaller watches. One lady there, every single time, feels the need to tell me that I am looking at women's watches. They are not lol they're just 36mm.

What rectangular watches do you have that you like? I am always looking for other ones.

You need to remind that lady what size watches men were wearing before 2000

Rectangular: I also have a Tank, a Casio W-800, and a Fitbit versa 3

All three watches are very comfortable and low profile on the wrist. Something about the rectangular shape works better for my wrist shape, my wrists are very flat or something

From one Sein fan to another-well done with yours as well!

I have the same size wrist as you. 36mm and below is really where it's at. 🤝
