Weekend discussion: what is a “weekend watch” nowadays?

Once upon a time, there was the concept of a “weekend watch”. Generally, it referred to a watch you’d wear on the weekend because it wasn’t as fitting to wear during the work week. But this was from an era where sartorial standards for the workplace was…shall we say…dressier? More formal? Less…hobo chic? I remember the days when I wore a full suit to work. I don’t miss it at all. But it does mean that the notion of a weekend watch has also changed.

Back in the day, it usually meant that sports watches were not befitting of workplace attire. And those would be your weekend watches. And dressier watches are what you would wear with your suit and tie during the work week.

But nowadays, anything goes! Heck, if flip flops are socially acceptable (I said acceptable, and I don’t mean recommended or preferred) then your watch choice is pretty much a free for all.

Do you have a few weekend watches still that you only wear on the weekends? What makes it a weekend watch? Are they more fun or loud than your “non-weekend” watches?

I do tend to wear the Cartier Tank Solarbeat to dressier occasions, but I find it so versatile with a quick change of the strap. Here, it’s pictured with an affordable StrapCo grey suede strap, and I find it comes off as a totally casual weekender. Thoughts?

I wear my Rolex OP on the weekends. I work as a pediatric physical therapists so I have kids hit me with toys and such so I don’t want to bang it up to bad but in weekends I will hike with it so I definitely don’t baby any of my watches

I'm retired and wear what I want. Always Friday night and Saturday mornings lol. Cargo pants and my Carhart plaid shirt. My Orient Open Heart. Took it off the ostrich leg strap and put on the tobacco suede strap.

Still adore that Bambino open heart, definitely one I plan to grab soon (as well as a Boldr and a Brew, my eyes may be bigger than my wallet)

Whatever feels good and is a good fit for what you have planned!

No hard and fast rule for me but my Casio watches see more wear on the weekends than they do during the week.

·

It depends what I’m doing but usually whatever watch I have on the Fri stays on for the weekend. I have my G-Shock if in doubt!

I cycle all of my watches on a shifting schedule, so eventually they all end up being worn on the weekend. So I subscribe to your opinion that perhaps it's not so important anymore to have a watch on just the weekends.
