Planning the next 5 years

Hi watch family! Brand new to this platform, I would love to hear your opinions and suggestions about my planning over the next 5 years. My wife usually allows one new watch a year. However, I feel myself slowly becoming a Rolex fan boy. I would love to hear your words of advice to help venture into other brands and timepieces that would help me into having a more well rounded collection.

Speedmaster Professional 3861. Phenomenal watch, can walk in and buy one whenever you like, wears smaller than the dimensions seem on paper.

Go and try one on, it kind of looks like you are doubling (or tripling) up on 36mm Rolex models.

·

Good choices. Honestly I think limiting to one watch per year will help you choose only great timeless watches (as you are doing), without being distracted by lower value, hyped pieces that you will rarely wear

·

Keep that snoopy!

·

I would go for the JLC Reverso or Yellow Gold Daydate. Both would broaden your collection

·

The reverso would be the biggest change to what you have. And for me the ultimate dinner out watch

Obviously create a budget (and stick to it!) so you don’t bankrupt yourself. Then create a set of parameters so you don’t end up in a perpetual “catch-and-release” cycle. This step is pretty tough because you have to figure out your personal aesthetic, but once you do, it’s actually quite a relief since it becomes so much easier to just say ‘NO’ the latest greatest shiny watch

Welcome Andrew! Glad you could join us here on WC! That YT comment came in at the perfect time 😂

Recommending watches is...difficult. Only you know what you love and enjoy most - best thing we can do is suggest things and surface either watch lines or brands that may not be super mainstream/obvious. Of course trying on watches vs just making up your mind on whether it's "on the list" or not is key. Short story, I thought the JLC Reverso would be my dress watch (in paper) but when I compared the Reverso to the Cartier Tank, the Tank stole my heart!

Timepieces to consider (based on my tastes and what you already own)

  • Cartier Tank (check it out, compare it to how it makes you feel when looking at the Reverso)

  • Breitling Navitimer

  • Grand Seiko (as a whole, the brand is knocking things out of the park, and the good news is Timeworks is one of the few ADs that carries them!)

  • Lastly...have you thought about building and ordering a custom timepiece, in the spirit of piece unique, but NOT having it cost a small mortgage? Check out Sartory Billiard (I'm currently obsessed with them, and am working on a custom piece of my own) 😬

Hope this helps, and I hope to see you around WA my friend 🤝

I love your collection, and I love your plans for the next few watches. Great stuff.

I'm also in the "one watch a year" plan, though it's self-imposed. I think my wife would prefer I bought more.

My one suggestion would be to consider a Grand Seiko, especially a spring drive. They are far more appealing in the metal than photos would suggest, and add a dimension to a collection that it otherwise wouldn't have. Worth the trip to the AD for a browse and a try-on at least.

·

Just explore other brands and something is bound to be appealing. sounds like you are attempting to do this. I enjoy Rolex as much as the next guy but there are ons of other great watches out there. Glad I decided to check them out.

Thanks for such a warm welcome @The_Timist! Tried talking the wife and kid to come let me hang out with you guys tonight but not enough notice :(. Recommending watches is so difficult but I do love to hear all opinions and keep an open mind, but alas the heart wants what the heart wants.

Ive been eyeing the Grand Seiko ivory GMT with the blue hand on the leather strap, and the IWC Mark xx green and silver dials. I feel if I do see these in person I would be pulling the trigger. I can't tell if these would be impulse purchases and would be better off to sit and wait for the call to come for the no-date sub.

Ive tried a bunch of Cartier's and as much as I want to get into them they just don't mesh with me, which is unfortunate because they are beautiful.

The Navitimers legibility for me is tricky, I do love the direction Breitling is headed especially with the premier line it is stunning.

Looking forward to meeting up with you sometime hopefully another watches and wonder event. I really don't know how I ended up on your channel last night but I am so glad that I did, thank you again!

Im just waiting for the day to visit a JLC boutique. Ive tried on a couple of the monoface reversos, waiting to get the blue or green tribute in person, it is definitely a piece I will be getting!

Can you get your wife to talk to my wife LOL. Yes, Grand Seiko as of the past couple of months has been growing on me, I'm really interested in the Ivory looking GMT on the leather band. I just have actually never handled or seen a Grand Seiko in the flesh.

All good, there will be more events I'm sure!

I don't know how you ended up on my channel either, but I'm glad you did haha 😂

Fair, personal tastes are just so...personal? Lol just happy you tried Cartier in the first place! I hear you on the Navitimer - interestingly, the current and latest gen is a bit more legible, worth a test drive on the wrist I'd say. The Grand Seiko GMT though...yeah, that may very well mean you'd be walking out of the AD with it on the wrist my friend!

I completely hear you on the "do I refrain and wait for the next big grail, or do I get something in the interim?" front. I'm in the exact same boat, and it's HARD (definitely first world problem, that's not lost on me don't get me wrong) but yeah - so it goes sometimes, good problem to have I suppose 👍
