Fun 'novella' about my experience.
I was doing a musical production a few years ago, and one of the guys in the show showed me his watch - a Cartier Santos. Large size, white dial. He wore it as his every day watch. I really liked it, and went home and looked it up on the internet. When I saw the blue dial version, I really liked the Santos, haha.
After 4 years of Santos being in the back of my mind, haha, I went to a store that had a number of Santos models in stock, but they said they didn't have one w/ a blue dial. I told the lady helping me it was blue or nothing, but she took my phone number and told me she'd call if one came in.
I got in the car and went to another store - same deal, no blue. I get back in the car and my phone rings. It's the lady at the first store telling me they have one in the store for me...this was just about an hour after I left that store!
My guess was that the store sets some watches aside for their best customers, kind of like a hidden stock. The sales person at the second store said the blue models were hard to come by, so if I'm right about the hidden stock, that could be the reason (but again, just spitballing). Thinking the lady asked the boss about it and the boss said, "Sell it to him."
Word of caution. If you get one, it may come with a steel bracelet AND a leather strap. I'm fairly experienced with strap/bracelet changes, so I put on the leather. Walked around the house with it for a few minutes...and the watch fell off my wrist onto the hard tile floor. Created a raspberry on it that (fortunately) could be polished out. The changing process is a little different than I was used to, but I was sure I had the strap on securely. When you get one, be careful if you change, and make CERTAIN it is on securely.
