Electro Luminescence (EL) or LED lighting. Does it matter?

Hello everyone, I’ve seen on the electric internet, that many people have strong opinions on the lighting style on a particular watch. I find this surprising. How often do you keep the light on? Surely it’s to see the time in low lighting conditions so really, what difference does it make? I suppose I’m really talking here to modern digital watch fans where, with exception to the Casio F91. I’m not in any way bashing the F91, but let’s face it, it’s light function is really non-existent… What do you reckon? Is one style better than the other? If so, why? Or, like everything, is it personal? Would it make you NOT buy a watch you otherwise like because of its light characteristic?

Cool Bzilla. Would the lighting type affect your decision to purchase?

If it isn't Indiglo, it's just a cheap imitation... The beauty with Timex digitals is you don't need to make excuses for them being illegible at night.

Hiya Kristian.

“Indiglo” is Timex for Casio‘s EL, is it not?

Off topic, but do like Timex Ironmen digitals?

Timex came out with Indiglo, then Casio eventually released their "Illuminator"... Casio was way behind on the the lighting situation.

Lighting style doesn't really matter to me, if I want the watch to begin with. I know the light on the f-91 is almost pointless, but I still got one. I'll just wear it when probably won't need the light.

EL is perfectly even soft lighting, not just some candle in the corner.

Definitely EL. The screen gets evenly lit and legibility is not a problem. Power consumption is.

Yes, EL makes the time v easy to see in low light. Thanks for your reply.

Hey Oscar.

Yes! ‘….soft even lighting…’ spot on!

On some of the better end Casios, the LED fades in and out and the light seems to fill the screen evenly without the ‘…candle in the corner…’
