Hello I am a current student and I have some questions to the veterans here or people with more knowledge than me.

As I student (still in high school) I don’t find myself making much money, my dream watch is the speedy as it’s a classic and I “fell in love” with it the first time I saw it in person.

Here comes the question, what are some nice alternatives that I can remove that “itch” or want for that watch until I can comfortably buy it or should I just try and save up to buy the real deal like the speedy reduced or should I try experiencing more brands if so what do you guys recommend?

Thanks too everyone that responds 🙏🏼

Its different for everyone. I'm lucky as I don't have expensive tastes. I like the look of a watch and I can usually find an inexpensive alternative that satisfies that ich. You can get something that wears like a speedy and even looks like a speedy but only you can know if the fact it's not a speedy matters. Personally I would get the closest watch I could within budget and see if that does the trick. 🤷

Great advice

That’s 👏👏amazing advice

I’ve had this watch in my eye for a while but I wanted to ask this question so thank you 🙏🏼

Agreed in the Pagani. But the fabric strap they offer is very uncomfortable. Get the bracelet or a $20 leather strap from Amazon.

Oh thanks for the tip 🙏🏼

I suggest you concentrate on your education, get a degree, a job and moving up the ladder.

As you do that find watches that you can enjoy at an affordable price to you.

Once you've established yourself then look at the watches that are out of reach now.

Ofc ofc

My studies come first

·

Yea true but

I am going to study biochemistry to get into med school and study surgery and get a concentration in heart surgery 👍

·

I have an unpopular opinion. Grab the Pagani Design homage and just wear it for a few weeks and see how the thing sits on your wrist. Its a good way to find out of the real thing suits your fancy. If you wear it a month and you decide its not for you you will be out very little (Relatively speaking)

If it's the space connection you're after, you could try the Bulova Lunar Pilot, the Seiko Pogue, or even the Bulova Accutron Astronaut (looking very much like a Glycine Airman No. 1).

The Pagani Design options are a choice as well and very budget friendly.

I’ve met many and myself included, have gotten alternatives to scratch that itch. My experience is… it may only provide temporary itch relief. Somewhere somehow the thought of “I have yet to attain the real thing” will bug you!

I’ve done that with a cronos Pepsi, sugess Daytona, many AliExpress watches. It got quite out of hand and looking back, these were money that could be saved! I tried offloading them and took massive hits along the way.

It only got worse when people commented “oh is that a Rolex? Only to go ahh… I see”

It felt like I was trying to pull off something and put on a facade of I can attain such watches. I knew this wasn’t the path for me when I felt I needed to remove these watches when walking into a watch boutique.

I am now more selective in what I get! And I think 77 times before committing to any purchase.

Enjoy the hobby and all the best in school 🎉

Yea might aswell use my smartness (not bragging) to good use rather than something bad.

I think imma get the pagani but that seiko I searched it up and it peaked my interest thank you for that

Bulova if you have big wrists. I wish I could wear them !!!

There is a mathematical equation it is A man’s attractiveness is inversely proportional to the thickness of his wallet and his accoutrements are peacock like displays of breed worthiness. Casio won’t attract high end catwalk models fellas sorry but a Patek will give out the signal you can afford her … ( father of daughters .. seen it all ) 😂( Love your work icecream man 🙂 )

Check out Dan Henry vintage inspired watches. Most watches are around $300.

·

Get the Bulova Lunar Pilot or Dan Henry 1964.

Im in the same position as you, also a student in my last two years of high school. My grandfather gave me his Seiko pogue, the first automatic watch to go to space on the Skylab mission. If you look on chrono24 they sell between 200-1000 depending on model and condition

If you don’t mind a Homages, Pangani design make one just like it for a fraction of the price! But my recommendation is the Bulova Luna pilot, don’t look as similar to the speedy as the pangani do ( and will cost a bit more )but it’s a high beat quartz movement so it will be super accurate and will last you a lifetime 👌

·

IMHO the Bulova Lunar is the way to go. Great watch in its own right with an equally good (if not better) backstory. Plus; if you decide it’s not for you, it has a used value which is more than can be said for Pagani, Dan Henry, etc. And, it now comes in a smaller case size too!!!

My main advice is, try not to scratch the itch too often. If you want to do it once, and get a nicely priced watch on your wrist, go for it. Think of all the answers here, think about it some more on top of that, then buy something that will suit most of your needs. Then start saving, if your real goal is to have something like a Speedy Reduced (which aren't too bad, price wise, especially from dealers in Japan, but I digress).

Don't fall into the trap - that so many watch people do - of then buying nicely priced watch after watch after watch. And then sitting back in three years time and thinking, "Gee, I have a bunch of cheap watches, and I don't wear 3/4 of them with any regularity... and I still have no savings towards what I actually want."

It's a trap for young players and a LOT of people fall into it.

·

The Bulova Lunar Pilot will help. Make sure it’s the non date version with the vintage logo. It’s a “proper” Moonwatch in that it’s ancestor was worn on the moon. And this watch has an interesting super accurate high beat quartz.

Check out the range of Timex, you're bound to find affordable and durable options you like

·

I would buy something at a price range that you can afford to replace if something happened to it. There was a watch I really wanted at 20 that I couldn’t afford to buy at the time without using a significant portion of my savings (so I didn’t buy it), a few years later I released that the watch didn’t suit me after all and moved on. Your tastes may change so take the opportunity to experience more watches

·

Best thing I would suggest is to buy an homage watch I too love the Omega Speedmaster i truly love chronograph watches and would love to save up to buy it one day myself, so instead of buying something that I can't get now i got myself a Pagani Design speedmaster rose gold tone and I love it the black and white version and they all have have the same if not close to the same measurements as the real one so you can get an idea of how it feels

Probably best to buy one...then see if you like the way a Speedy-style watch looks and feels on your wrist.

If you love it, and you don't feel the need to save up for the real thing, then by all means, go crazy and buy all the variations.

However, if you want a real Speedy, I would recommend only purchasing one of the homages and then saving your money up for the real thing.

Too often, we can "waste" money on surrogates instead of what we really want, and paradoxically, put ourselves further away financially from getting it.

If a collection of homages feels good to you...then by all means feast away. Just warning you off from building a collection of homages if that won't ultimately scratch your Speedy itch.

Here are some Speedies in my collection...loads of different styles and choices...

I'll also vouch for the Bulova Lunar Pilot. It shares history with the Speedmaster yet has a personality of it's own. I have the larger case with the bracelet and it wears comfortably on my 6.5-6.75in wrist.
