Thoughts on the new release Grand Seiko Sbgn027G

  • GS has been dropping new models faster than the time I take to finish a meal and this new GMT quartz caught my attention seriously. Would love to know your thoughts and also on whether this is a better take than the much loved SBGN003?
on second thoughts do you think this is to combat the BB Pro GMT since the case size and design are similar?

Meh. 🤷‍♂️

GS crazy me, but no sparks for this one.  Looks like a black and white photo.

I don't like the BB Pro either, so that tracks right.

I know GS are good. I know about their precision movements. I know about the finishing. They are excellent watches. But I just can't bring myself to like them. But you do you. It's a fantastic watch and I certainly don't look down on anyone who has one.

I've got an old Parnis homage of the Rolex GMT Master II. It runs 15 seconds a day fast. It cost me £50, and I'll be quite frank... I've never seen another GMT watch that makes me want to replace it.

Saw this one in the GS boutique last week. The finish quality as usual is top notch. It's a nice piece and i think a better option over the SBGN003. The bracelet lack of micro adjustment is bloody annoying. I vented this to the staff, but they stated GS will never add micro adjust as it will add thickness to the clasps, and they want slim and classy. clearly you need to get it on the wrist.

Not sure this and the BB pro compare other than GMT function. The Pro visually looks twice the thickness of this one and way more toolish. The GS is a more jewellery look. It depends on what you like more. Both will be rock solid and unlikely cause you any issues.

I like GS and will be adding another to the collection, trouble is, as others have said they literally bring out a new option every week.

Glad to hear your thoughts on the piece. The bracelet is a major problem for sure. The good thing is GS responds to the critics’ call so let’s hope for a better future.

GS maybe lacks the brand cache. aside from that, not all GS models are good just like not all Rolexes are good (Looking at you Air King)😂

I wish it was that simple. I've had quite a few normal Seikos (SXK's and Seiko 5's) and was very happy with them. I just don't like the shape, size and design of most GS's. I think they are designed with as many flat areas to accommodate their polishing technique. It's not a look that I like. Truthfully, there aren't many Rolexes that I like - Explorer 1, Datejust (some older dials)  and the Yachtmaster with oysterflex.

A lot of it has to do with my wrist size, which excludes a lot of watches. I have to go with what suits me, and not a lot of watches actually do.

GS does indeed seem to be on a ‘watch release every day’ kick. I did see this model at a local AD. Very good watch and finishing, like all GS. However, this was less of an appeal than my current SGBN005 - the more rounded case, 4 o’clock crown and lack of crown guards make the SGBN027g more like a dress casual. I prefer the look of mine, but may be biased! One other fine point, I think the sharper hands of the 005 are more attractive.

That’s a phenomenal watch!

I like that quite a bit! It's just the right kind of boring for me

I absolutely love the way this watch looks; however, it seems too much money for a quartz movement watch. I got the SBGE257 and the watch is just awesome; I think the SBGN003 must wear nicer than the SBGE257 (since it is considerably thinner), but still, I think >3K for a quartz movement is too much.

Thanks, this is a useful trip watch and in my earlier life could have easily been a daily wear.

The Sbgn027G is a beautiful watch.  The 9F quartz combined with Zaratsu polishing makes this watch superb! the one thing that ruins it is the 4:30 date window - for me 4:30 date windows are the worst

·

Agree re the micro adjust..they could easily factor it in to the bracelets and not increase size. If they can do MEMS precision on the movement parts the micro adjust would be an easy walk in the park. When the staff told GS would never do it etc, I rolled my eyes very hard. We all know that's a cop out. I've not physically seen the poor tolerance thing, maybe I am not looking shard enough or have glazed eyes at the finish. Your definitely right GS thing is the polishing and dials. The price raising ala Rolex style is very annoying. It has all the hallmarks of Rolex and the stupid games they force the genuine to play.

·

I explicitly went for the sbgn003 after seeing the new one.
reasons were quite simple (in order of importance for me):

crown guard and date wheel position at 3

date wheel color in black to match the dial

the classic razor looking hands vs the copped off one

lastly the splash of Orange on the dial.

Add to that, a frameless one as well.

I think GS really shines with their simplistic styles, three hand date etc....  The GS sport models do not appeal to me at all.
