What takes a higher wallet share of preference in selection of a new watch for you

For the purposes of this poll assume whatever you buy keeps time relatively well and won't lose like 20 seconds a day.

Do you think in terms of "I need to experience this movement or do you look purely at design, dial and aesthetic etc"

One of my friends who has an excellent collection will only buy for very niche movements - Eg: Armin Strom resonance, Louis Moinets etc. For this reason be may also not prefer extremely well finished watches with "average" movements (japanese independents)

My person opinion is that no one really gives a shit about movements. As long as the product does what is intended relatively well (keep time), all I really care about is aesthetic

What do you guys think?

Dial/Design first, look at price, then movement. Don't care how great something looks, if it is a poor movement at an unrealistic price, I am out. IE, discovered a new brand (will go unmentioned) that has a gorgeous dial and case. Price is $1699. Movement? NH35. Nope, and now that brand is persona non grata for any future consideration.

Feel the same way. There has to be a certain amount of attention to the movement. Which one it is, how well it’s finished, any type of modification even if it’s just decorative.

Dial and design for me. 'Bout the only thing I care for movements are their anti-magnetisation features, accuracy, robustness and ease of repair.

·

If dial is all that matters, then why buy a mechanical watch?

·

The only company I’m seriously considering for my collection where I’m thinking about movement as a higher consideration is Glashutte Original.

·

I'm with you - watches are basically accessories, so the aesthetics (dial and case design) is generally my primary consideration. Of course, it should keep time relatively well, and be reliable, but I care much less about how many tourbillons it has as opposed to how it looks on my wrist.

I think the sweeping seconds hand is the answer you're looking for. Still part of "aesthetics"

Look , we all know the names of watches we like , no real car guys buys a car for it’s looks it’s whats under the hood that still matters. Mechanical watch enthusiasts I believe are motor heads bike , car doesn’t matter:)

Really shocked at the results so far! 🤯

I voted movement .

Realistically the only time I ever look at the caseback is if I get pretty bored at work. Neat, but much less relevant than the dial

·

I’ve never really cared about the movement of a watch I want to buy. By all means, I want something reliable, but I’m not into the specs of a watch movement 👎🏻I’m more about the wearability and design of the watch itself 👍🏻

Good question. Quartz is part of this discussion too. Would you ever consider a 9f by grand seik

Not really true. You wouldn't buy a high performing car you weren't aesthetically connected to. If that were the case the Nissan GTR would outsell all of Italy

Interesting. What's on your radar for consideration right now? And what would you consider non negotiables with a movement?

The heart rules in a big way for most , I am very literal in my nature being an analytical person I suppose so I see the world from an engineering brain and a musician’s mind . I think we are both right as I suppose it’s not a definitive answer able question!

Oh and I would have the GTR over a Ferrari and a Porsche over a Lamborgini !

I'm interested in all varieties of watch movements. It's not just the dial for me.

On radar is hoping for a reissue 2254 Peter Blake with the new Spirate regulation. 🤞🏻🤞🏻(One day hopefully)

Non negotiable, is reliability. Nowt more useless than a watch that's stopped. 😀👍🏻😉
