Chinese homages. Thoughts?

My Willard on a budget from steeldive. I know Chinese homages are a controversial subject in the watch community but I bought it as a trial run with the idea of getting the real thing this Xmas. I was blown away by the quality for the price (£48). The loom is off the chart with sapphire crystal and anti reflective undercoating. As it happens I fell in love at first sight with the SPB333J1 and the Willard will have to wait. For now this is more than scratching that itch.

Best value for money if you don’t mind clones of other brands design language

My whole collection currently consists of Chinese homage watches. There really isnt anything wrong with them in terms of build quality.

Agreed. I think homage watches are an excellent gateway into watch collecting for many people.

Yes for the price they can’t be beat. But you definitely need to shop a little carefully and do your research on the more reliable brands.

I have several steel dives. Great value for the money and so far very reliable 🙏☺️

They are perfectly fine, my only personal preference with them is that they need to do something the original doesn't. A bronze pelagos homage, a green FXD homage, different hands or dial etc.

Agreed to be honest during Covid my business was shut down for months and I had to sell my first Rolex. I fell into a rabbit hole of replicas, after diving into that world (buying one rep) decided it wasn’t for me and started to watch reviews and read blogs on homages. I eventually graduated into the orginal brands. Though I believe they are a great affordable gateway, I slowly felt the same way I did as the replicas when people would comment “nice sub” or “is that a blusey” and I had to explain no it was a copy but not a replica. I can be a little vain and didn’t want to have those conversations anymore. BUT!! I still browse AliExpress and have a homage Daytona to wear to the garden center lol

That’s a good way to approach it I think. I also think that it’s a good way to have something on your wrist that resembles a watch that is pretty much unattainable for most mortal without being a fake.

Ah man sad you had to sell your Rolex but I guess at least you get to start afresh and work your way back up to that big purchase. A hard reset! Glad to hear you decided to forget the replicas. Respect for your honesty though. I’ve had a Daytona and a Submarinor homage in the past so no shame in that! I find they keep their value pretty well on eBay too when you flip them, even made a little money on a few. Some people don’t want to wait a month for a watch on Ali it seems.

I think there are some solid homage brands. I don't think they take away from large brands like Rolex, because a lot of people cannot afford those expensive brands. Clearly, they aren't geared toward the average Joe. I think they're just for people who like the look of certain watches outside their price range. Also, I've heard of some people who do own more expensive watches, but will own an homage for when they don't want to damage their nicer watch.

I own a couple of them myself and do enjoy them.

Ah just had a look at your profile not quite the hard reset! Some cracking pieces 👍🏻

I personally don't mind inexpensive watches, most of my watches are builds at this point. A replica is fine for what it is, but where is really the fun in it? Many of these companies have designs that are different and interesting.

I Was skeptical about Chinese watches as well at first and even though I'm new to watch collecting one thing I've learned is the word "cheap" is relative and you really don't have to spend top dollar to get top quality

I find homages to be a good option when you either want to try a watch style long term on the wrist before committing financially, or when you give up on availability of a watch at ADs. Unavailablity of Rolex and a refusal to get screwed on the scalpers market drove me to Pagani Design when they launched the ‘Palm Motif’ Datejust. I have decided I’ll give Rolex another look in about a year when the Bucherer deal has settled and give that avenue a chance.

Agreed. I prefer inexpensive to cheap as I normally associate that with something that is poorly made and some of these homage watches are so very well built. That Sugess looks great, I particularly like their Zenith Chronomaster homage.

My Parnsrpe version, or as I call it, my parsnip😂

It’s the coolest looking parsnip I’ve seen 👍🏻

·

I have one too. It's the watch I wear the most, love not being worried to scratch it and whatnot. And looks beautiful.
