Man I think it's important to go through a few senseless, inexpensive watches to really find out what you like and what you don't like.
I've caught myself learning about a watch and thinking I'll love it, everything just seems perfect until I try it on, I start to realize I don't like super thick and heavy bracelets or watches with certain proportions.
It's better to make those mistakes with straps or inexpensive watches than it is after saving up for 5 years to buy your grail only to realize it feels or looks awful on your wrist.
A while ago, I bought some straps for my Grand Seiko, I love the bracelet but wanna put some fancy straps on that thing once in a while to change it up a bit.
I got some amazing Delugs straps and wanted to try them with a deployant buckle, it just seemed so right to me.
I mean, deployant buckles on bracelets work just fine, it should be the same on a nice leather strap and it just looks so cool to me.
But oh boy, I was so wrong, I wore it in the strap for a while but it just felt and looked a but off to me, I couldn't get the perfect fit and the underside just felt too bulky, after a while I replaced the deployant buckle with a normal traditional Delugs buckle and the difference was night and day.
It's just one of those things you learn over time by trying different stuff.
When I first got into watches I was really into oversized watches, I couldn't see myself wearing anything under 40mm, now I'm almost the complete opposite, then small watches are my favorite.
I'd have regretted it deeply if I bought a 45mm Panerai after saving up for ages only to realize I didn't actually enjoy wearing it after a while.
I've heard about a lot of people saving up for that Rolex Explorer they've always wanted only to end up regretting it shortly after.
TLDR:
I've never subscribed to this whole "just save up and buy your grail" attitude because it will probably end up being a big mistake. I think you have a pretty healthy attitude towards this hobby and just keep doing your thing.
Your tastes will change dramatically over time but that's alright, most of us have been through this same journey.
