I'm that guy

I'm that guy.

I'm that guy who started seriously thinking about watches around 2021. The "Pandemic Watch Guy". It never feels right to say that. It sounds almost derogatory. I've heard people on podcasts and read content where they discuss it like people were sitting at home, watching YouTube, and found watches out of boredom. Creating this wide but shallow pool of newbie watch enthusiasts. That wasn't me. Well maybe I was wide and shallow but I wasn't home or bored. I was an "Essential" worker and was working the most O.T. of my life. But I was newly single with some disposable income, no one to answer to, and an itch to replace the watch my dad gave me as a young man. But like it or not, the timeline fits, I'm that "Pandemic Watch Guy"

I'm that guy

I'm the guy who bought cheap watches instead of saving up. In the first couple of years after joining the Cult of Horology, I bought a couple of silly Timex, and a couple of Quartz from Offerup. Amazon was my original AD. I bought a couple of Seiko's online and a couple of "Homage" watches from AliX. I built several NH35 variations before I started to consider spending more than a couple hundred on a watch. It's true what they say, if I would have saved all that money and spent it on a single watch I probably could have bought a $1500 watch. If I shop pre-owned (which I do) that would have gotten me a great entry level luxury watch to start. But I didn't, I'm that guy that chased around "budget" watches.

I'm that guy.

I'm the guy who bought way too many watches way too quickly. The guy who bought watches with no reason, direction or connection.

It didn't start that way. I started getting seriously interested in watches in the summer of 2021. But I didn't buy my first watch until January of 2022.

I spent months deciding to pull the trigger on that first watch. I learned the difference between quartz and mechanical, the difference between mechanical and automatic. I learned the difference between a dress watch and a sport watch. That a watch band is called a strap (or a bracelet). Little did I know I hadn't even scratched the surface.

I had to learn what a designer watch was. I mean when I first googled watch brands it brought up Filippo Loreti, Nixon, Fossil, and Invicta. They seemed legit (No offense if that's your thing 😜). And $200 for a watch! Wow! That's crazy expensive for a watch. They MUST be luxury right? I'm glad I kept researching.

I sent dozens of pictures to my daughter and my friend over those months. "What do you think about this one? Is orange too bright? Can you believe this thing cost $200?" to the point my friend finally reply "Just buy a f#@king watch already".

So I did. I bought my late fathers brand. A Timex Expedition. $35. Just to test the waters. Would I even like wearing a watch? And btw, I didn't. It was stiff and itchy and uncomfortable. I was confused why guys enjoy this. That stock canvas strap was a P.O.S. but I had no idea. Then I saw a post on a forum of an Expedition on a NATO and decided to give it a try. It changed everything! And the game was on!

2022 I only bought a total of 5 watches including that Timex. But in 2023 I bought or built no less than 20 watches. I was like a kid in a candy store. EVERYTHING seemed amazing! Colors, textures, shapes, handsets, straps, bracelets, bezels, big watches, small watches, silly, serious, sub dials, dive, dress, micro brands, aaahhhhhhh! I wanted to try it ALL! So I did, or I tried at least. So I'm that guy who filled his box too quickly without any real appreciation for each piece.

And do you know what? I WOULDN'T CHANGE A THING!

Do I have a couple of questionable pieces? Yes, for sure. I've gifted a half dozen of the sketchiest. But I enjoy every one I currently have.

Do I have too many watches? Idk but probably.

Did I have fun? H&ll yes!

Did I learn stuff? Another H&ll yes!

I'm not saying things won't slow down, that they won't find more direction. They already have. I've begun to discover my tastes. I've begun to find sentimental appreciation for some, like the watch gifted to me by my best friend. I've begun to appreciate the difference between price points. While I still believe watches should be fun sometimes, like my Charlie Brown watch or my Kermit and I still consider buying San Martin and SeeStern (Man I like that SeaQ copy) I also understand that a little more will get me a Hamilton or killer Nodus. I understand that if I have the patience to hold out maybe I can score a Oris or Formex or Omega.

But I don't regret being that guy for a second. I wouldn't trade all of those watches in exchange for the single Tudor North Flag (My favorite Tudor). BORING! And if your that guy, know your not alone.

It's okay if you disagree. And it's okay if you agree. It's okay if you love San Martin and SeeStern and It's okay if your a Swiss Luxury guy. It's your watch journey. Be whatever guy you want to be.

Just have fun and let the next guy have his fun as well.

Well written. We have traveled a very similar path.

I think it's a well worn path. Traveled by many 😁

·

Many of us have traveled the path. At some point we stop to think and redefine our purchasing strategy. For me the most important thing is to enjoy each watch regardless of its cost and/or origin. I have Swiss, Japanese, American, English and Chinese watches and I enjoy them all equally! And yes, I could have saved up and had just one luxury watch, but that would have made it impossible for me to enjoy watches of all styles! With just one watch I could have diverse watches, formal watches, chronographs, vintage watches, pilot watches, digital watches, etc., etc., etc.

Greetings!

You made us read all this text without even a single photo of any watch you own?!?

Enjoy the process that’s all that matters. There isn’t a right or wrong way.

Great story & glad you're proud of it. If it gives you enjoyment & isn't harming anyone, carry on regardless.

In the last couple of weeks I've realised I'm not a watch collector but I do have a collection. I'm just an impulsive, compulsive, consumer of shiny baubles that I fall in love with on a whim & then ghost them 3-6 months on. I rarely make a real emotional connection but enjoy them whilst they make me smile. 30 watches - 4 keepers I'd say. I'm entirely comfortable with the whole arrangement & this keeps me happy :)

·

I’m that guy who has played guitar for 18 years and kept wondering, “Why does John Mayer keep talking watches….”

·

Yuuup, as much as we try to learn from others or impart our new-found wisdom, one really has to go on that journey to really absorb the lessons & develop their style.

I'm kinda the same, but a year later. I didn't have an 'essential' job, but it was one that could be done remotely. I was still full time, but I discovered how much busy work I was doing and found hobby time by eliminating that.

Same as you, spent about $1500 on 20 watches in a year. I could probably have my Speedmaster 3594.50 by now if I had been more patient.

Would I change what I did? Not completely, but I would have held off on a few purchases. Fundamentally though, the journey would be the same & I'm glad it happened.

I went the opposite route during the pandemic. I had two watches worth $600 and $800, and though I discovered inexpensive watches during the pandemic, I only ended up with three or four I really liked. Then I started building, then movements became more interesting... and I haven't bought anything from a grey market site since 2021.

Thank you for reading it! The number of people who seem to relate is a bit surprising.

You are not alone. We are all that person. Lol

·

I'm that guy too. I got into watch making as well!

Check out my collection if you feel guilty. There's probably tens of thousands of us...

·

Well you can collect 7 watches of the best brands or you can collect beaters that look awesome for their price point. It all depends on your budget or how snobby you have become.

Either way welcome to the platform.

·

You are still new, give it time....eventually you could end up being the guy with over a hundred watches at different price points....it's a long road, enjoy the trip

·

We're all that guy! Well said. I also wouldn't have it any other way. Everyone approaches this hobby differently, even if there are similarities. And we definitely have different financial abilities. You do you!

Enjoyed this post! Definitely been there. I thought I was the dogs bollocks when I bought a Skagen for about £150 back in 2015!

Since then I bought another watch about the same price in 2018 on kickstarter and discovered the wonders of sapphire crystal. 2022 I decided it was time for an automatic watch, couldn't believe I was spending over £300 on a watch, but I had been eyeing it up for ages. I got a nice bonus at work and it was on sale, obviously someone was telling me to buy it! 😜

That's when the bug took hold. I'm glad I can appreciate watches of all levels as there is a time and place for everything.

Clearly it was meant to be. It's almost as if the clouds parted, with rays of sun shining through, and a chorus of Angels gently singing in the background.

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

This 100%. Whatever your journey ends up being was meant to be. There is no right way to enjoy this hobby.

·

An ode to folks like us. Cheers

·

I Love pandemic watch guys. I don't care if the apple watch or a vincero got you here. I appreciate folks in the hobby. Cheers. May all you purchases be keepers

Budget constraints put me squarely in the awesome beater category. But if I'm being honest, if I had eff you money there's a good chance I could be a watch snob. 😜 For now I'm a budget snob 😂

I can't wait to get there!

But for now I'm trying to just breathe it in and enjoy the trip like you suggest.

I might have stretched my financial abilities for a watch or 2 lol. But ramen, canned chili and Mac and Cheese are delicious so it's all good.

thanks for sharing your journey thus far--and that's what it is, a journey. be unapologetic about yours. buy what you like within your means. enjoy

Welcome fellow watch addict, you are in good company here!
