Ebay India?? Any experiences?

Good Morning!

I keep seeing posts of really cool vintage watches from India on EBay.

Has anyone ever taken a chance at ordering from any of these sellers?

I once read that quite many of them being frankenwatches, so I never did

Yup, I think they’re mostly frankenwatches. Youll notice they often have refinished dials and a seller will have many of the same watch. I’ve never seen a seller with 30 of one model of vintage watch.

If you want to buy for the look, I say go ahead. But if you expect the quality of the original manufacturer, I think you’ll be disappointed.

These will be mostly 'Mumbai Specials' which are Franken watches. Lots of them appear to be Oris or Fortis watches for some reason (they aren't) & often have brightly coloured dials.

I think @Stricko ordered one of these at some point??

Yes, many years ago...

Save your money, they're awful.

Unreliable, a proper stew of bits loosely assembled to resemble a wristwatch. The couple I had were honestly so bad I'd have paid the asking price for the seller NOT to post me them 😭🤣🤣

Thank you all! That is what I suspected.

My understanding is that many listings from India are not authentic. Random guts, for instance. That said, if you don't care so much about that, some sellers do funky stuff to the watches, such as adding bright colors that the original manufacturer would never use, which could make for an interesting piece. (Assuming you were getting a very cheap price.)

I bought a couple last year before I knew what frankens or Mumbai specials were.

Considering what I paid (little), where the money went and that both are still working, I consider it money well spent & have no regrets.

I've had a couple, and one is an obvious franken watch

But for £20 delivered with a basic jewelled Swiss movement and it works a treat, can't complain. A fun little watch for not much money. And then I got this for £90

A 70s Citizen, did think at 1st it was a franken, but the only things not origonal are the glass and maybe the second hand, and it runs lovely(the strap is one i put on it myself).

Thing is buying these is a minefield, do your research, look up the specific model, has it got origonal case (a lot haven't) is the dial repainted (a lot are) and get a photo of the movement, its a hot n humid climate and you don't want corrosion on the mechanism(that's why a lot are repainted dials snd recased). There's a lot of frankens out there mixed in with the better stuff, go in with eyes wide open, plenty of knowledge and you'll sort out the good from bad. If you just want a fun colourful watch to wear that's really cheap yeah go for it. If your looking at more expensive rarer models be careful and research. And don't forget if you buy your not only giving people a wage in a poor part of the world but also giving a lease of life to a vintage movement.
