Design Over Function, the Rado Over Pole

Even though I have been on Watch Crunch a while, I haven't really made a post, but since I got this watch a couple of weeks ago I thought I'd share some thoughts about it. When I first got into the hobby in late 2019 one of the first watches I bought was the original 37mm brown dial Captain Cook, but unfortunately I got two defective ones in a row from Jomashop ( that's a whole other story), som I was kinda put off from the brand by no fault of their own. Later I've tried on several of the 42mm ones, but never could decide on the right color for me, and also they were just a tad too large for my wrist. When this Over Pole world timer was released on Hodinkee I thought this is the one for me. Now to back to the title of this post; design over function: Yes the world timer complication is VERY fun and I think it looks amazing the execution of it in their ceramic is crisp and beautiful. The truth is however that of course I played around with it for a day or two but now that complication is simply decoration for me.

I love the gradient dial, the trademark moving anchor, the dauphine hands. This is my first hand wound watch as well, which is why I included a pic of the the caseback. It's really nicely finished for a watch at this price point. So I'm curious how many of you guys buy a watch, if not despite it's complication, but when the complication is fairly useless to you?

That is an absolutely gorgeous watch, and the movement is fantastic!

Funny, but at this point, I feel like EVERY complication is totally and completely useless to me!  Hell, even the time telling feature - the central function - of a watch is completely useless to me.  God's honest truth is that I just like looking at shiny things reflect and refract light, I like hands that sweep across a dial, and I like having it all my wrist, so that I can glance down and enjoy the show.

If I had this, I doubt I'd ever leave the house.

Enjoyed my time with one! For my old eyes, the bezel font is also too small to read easily. But a lovely & faithful reissue 😎👍🏼

As a collector of watch complications I need to say that minute repeaters are very rarely used to tell time in the dark, GMTs are often not reset to show the two proper time zones while traveling. Dive watches rarely see depths below the bottom of the hot tub.  Chronometers are seldom used to time anything.  Tachymeters, who has ever used one?  Although most complications never get used they are functional and we get to showcase them while showing someone our watch.

All true man... No doubt. I'm sure the next time I'm hanging out with one of my very few watch buddies It'll be fun to play with the world timer.

Now I have to have some kind of automaton! I wonder if there is a 24 hour outlet near me? 😂  What you say is so true Brian...these are our "jewelry" ...and thanks for the comment. I'm glad you like this one...I really love it. Cheers!

I want to buy this really bad but I’m worried it will wear too small. I know that generally isn’t a concern for most in this community but I just feel my sweet spot is 39-41mm. I have a 7 inch wrist.

Hahaha! Yup, I get where you are coming from. I too love shiny (and sparkly) things.  I also appreciate incredible engineering, clever use of materials and a cool back story.  Which is why I am currently gravitating to all things Rado :)
