Yes Watch

This is probably outside the wheelhouse of most people here, but I'll muse about it anyway. Marc from Long Island Watch turned me on to Yes watches with his wrist checks, and I always thought they looked cool. Now he sells them, and they're on sale, both on his and Yes' website, so I'm sorely tempted to get one. If you don't know, Yes watches present a host of data on the sun and moon, sunrise, sunset, moon phase, moonrise and -set, for any location in the world, at a lot more.

The upside is the watch is cool and unique. The downside, it's unwearably big, at 46mm wide, 16mm tall, 55mm lug to lug. Marc, who has about the same wrist size as me, pulls it off, but he's Marc and I'm not. I'll probably end up using it as desk clock rather than a wristwatch. At least it's titanium, so at it won't weigh like a cinderblock. And it's pricey; even at 35% off, it comes to about $650 on a bracelet. I'm intrigued, and feeling the itch that's becoming a compulsion which drives most of my watch purchases, but I'm still thinking, should I spend the money on what's essentially a novelty? It will amuse me, but it's not exactly practical (but then what about watches is?).

Anyway, I'm thinking out loud, and wondering if anyone has thoughts, or actual experience with the watch. Yea or nay? You only live once, or what are you thinking?

Too complicated for me.

I like the concept of analog digital but honestly I don't like the execution here. The strap doesn't fit. The huge size. The odd looking buttons. The screen that doesn't fit the style of the watch. The single hand.

And yes titanium is awesome but it's pointless if you can't wear the watch.

There are much better desk toys you'll enjoy much more than this in my opinion.

I want to grab one of these casios. And also a little Pikachu toy. And a nice desk clock. There are stores dedicated to cool mens toys and desk stuff.

Having said that I understand the obsession with a cool watch. But in my opinion the cure is to find a better one, not settle for something half baked. Especially not if that thing costs what most people pay for rent.

Here are some cool titanium watches that are loaded with features and are actually worth buying.

Check out the G Shock gbx100 - that has some cool features like tides and I think also sunset etc. Same screen as that white one above but slightly different case and features.

Oh and that Garmin is loaded with features too. I think they have a surfing version. They might also have a titanium or steel version.

Interesting for sure, but I don't think it will hit the masses. Didn't Marc say something about Norwegians being behind the brand or something? Never hear of them before he mentioned the watch and I live in tiny Norway 🤔

·

I looked on the site. The final nail in the coffin is that it's rechargable. Unless they made the battery replaceable this means the life of the watch is very limited.

@CitizenKale, I'm not what these random G-Shocks have in common with the Yes, other than being digital and quartz. None of these do sun or moon rise and set, or moon phases and other astronomical calculations, and certainly not graphically, so none are comparable. And yes, I have two G-Shocks.

Just showing some other cool options.

I assumed the astronomy stuff was just a novelty that could be replaced with a slightly different novelty.

If you actually need that data then it would be much easier with a phone app.

Those have been out for quite some time, and I rarely see one in the wild.  I've seen them more so in Europe than in the US.

A Casioak, or three hand quartz watches are novel? Yes, I find the Yes watch novel and cool. No, I don't need the complication. And no, I don't need a wristwatch either. After all, I have my phone to tell me the time, as you point out.

Actually, I did find an Android app that does the almost the same thing, and shows the data in the same way. It does make me think twice, but I'm drawn to the watch anyway.

Well, if you're okay with digital (and you have an iPhone), the Apple Watch can present a lot of information. Some thirdy party apps have gorgeous complications.

That is one cool watch. If you like it and have the budget for it, I say go buy it.

This. Is. WatchCrunch!

It’s definitely an interesting watch, but if you won’t wear it, then it’s not much of a watch. I’d suggest putting the money toward either a wearable watch or a really cool clock rather than a novelty that is neither.

I don't have an iPhone, so I'm not getting an Apple watch. But you do give me pause. The Yes watch costs as much as a smart watch. But then, none of this is sensible. I spent even more money on high accuracy quartz, so it can be just a little less accurate than an atomic G-Shock, 'cause it's cool, it can do it without an antenna. And I've spent way more than that on mechanical watches, that are less accurate than quartz, 'cause they're cool, 'cause they can keep time with springs and gears and no battery. And don't get me started on my Spring Drive; pay even more for a quartz watch 'cause it runs on springs and gears, and no battery. Watch collecting seems to be about spending too much money on outdated technology. So the Yes watch is spending too much money on a digital quartz watch just cause it's a cool and does something that other digital quartz doesn't.

@TalkingDugong, thanks. I think what I really needed was an enabler.

I’ve got one and it is cool. Trouble is that I can’t read it without my glasses so I was going to drop it on Chrono 24

Neat! How does it wear, and how big is your wrist? My eyes also aren't what they used to be, but if I can manage a negative display G-Shock Square, I figure I should be able to manage this.

On the bracelet it feels smaller than its claimed 47.7.  The leather strap flared out a bit making it feel bigger.  The rubber strap hasn't even been out of its wrapping

Just came across this post about Yes watches. I also own one as had been enamoured with the design and material. Unfortunately I can't say I love it all that much as the fit and finish is really lacking. Had so much trouble trying to just change the bracelet to strap as the pins and alignment are terrible. Finally managed to get the bracelet back on but haven't worn it in years now
