What do you thank about watch winder?

Watch winders are they really beneficial? I’m wondering because I have a couple of winders in my watch box that I’ve never used. The winders work as directed and they look impressive. I can see them being useful if you have a perpetual calendar that you only wear once a year to see if the date changed to February 29th or not. That watch is not the watch for me. Truth be told it doesn’t bother me that my watches stop running. I don’t see any harm in it. I give them a quick shake or I run the crown between my fingers, set the time and I’m off. Sometime a reset the date at the same time. Sometime I don’t. Am I missing something?

Ok, let me start by saying that I think grand complications look cool and they sound impressive. In my eyes bit useless. What am I talking about all watches a useless. I don’t think perpetual, annual calendars or a moon phase watches are for me. Will a moon phase complication help me figure out if there is a blue moon this month? Do I care if there are 2 full moons in one month? No. But if you do maybe I can see the value of a winder. Maybe. If I buy ever buy a moon phase watch I will promise you this. I’ll rock it set wrong and love it all the same.

Now what? I’m back to the benefits of the winder. Do you use one and why?

I have a winder at home but I don't use it as it is too loud and runs constantly (maybe cause I got a cheap one from Amazon).

I've watched a lot of videos by those who know far better than I, and the consensus (there are dissenters for sure) is that winders are not a good idea. No one would consider letting their car run 24/7 for obvious reasons.

I have one and use it. I use it for my automatics that I plan on wearing in a few days. Especially ones with screw down crowns. Doing tile work for years sometimes the fingers just don't work like they should. Also my winder runs really quiet. You can't hear it running. It will run for 4 minutes then stop. It will pause for about 50 minutes the run again. They are designed to keep your watch barely wound not fully wound.

I used to have winders, but just because it was fun to see my watches spin round and round. Have since gotten rid of them. I like setting the time on a watch every time I get to it in the rotation. It's something to do!

I think they take up too much space. If I didn't have this crippling watch addiction maybe I could afford a home big enough to fill with watch winders.

Winders have a purpose.

I will never own a watch I NEED a winder for.

Therefore, I will never need a winder.

I have had a couple of watch winders similar to that one in the photo over the years: two rotors, 4 watches in total. I only had two automatic watches at first, so I really only used one rotor at a time.

Because mine were cheap models, they did not last for too long until they started being noisy and finally stopped working, first one rotor, then the other.

Now in my current winder, only one of the rotors works, and it is starting to signal, through rumbling noises, it's nearing its end. Once it breaks, I think I will not replace it. As I have more automatic watches now, I will see how I feel about setting the time and date every time I take a different watch.

I think they are useful if you want to keep one or two watches running (especially if they do not have hand-winding) that you will wear occasionally over some weeks, among others that you use maybe daily and thus do not need to be winded.

Winders are great for the missus, as she will inevitably ask me to set her watches or not wear them.

On second thought, I should’ve just stuck to quartz.

If you own a lot of automatic watches, winders can be quite useful. Especially for those watches that don’t get worn often enough. Allowing a watch to run for a day or two every month, is important to maintaining its overall condition IMO.

I bought mine just because of the moonphase complication on one of my watches. It's not very easy to set it correctly so that winder helps a lot

That's why I don't have a moon phase. If I get one. It will never be set right.
