Cheap quartz alternative to the Speedy

Hello everybody,

My brother came to me for a suggestion about his first watch.

He has not fallen into the pit yet, so I do not think a mechanical timepiece would be the right choice (charging, servicing and care would probably bother him).

He seems to like the Omega Speedmaster design, so I was looking for a cheap quartz looking somehow similar to the Speedy. By the way, I am not a fan of clones, so bonus points if it shows some kind of originality in the design.

Any suggestions, please?

Budget: 250 dollars more or less

Thank you very much, have a nice day!

If he saves a little move he can get a Bulova Lunar Pilot. It's a chronograph, quartz, that also went into space and went into the moon. It was famously used to replace one of the astronauts broken Speedmasters. It's more expensive than the budget, but with a story like that, they would probably enjoy it.

Otherwise seiko probably has a quartz chrono in that range that he would like.

Unfortunately, he has a slim wrist, so the Lunar Pilot might be too large for him

I have mainly quartz watches but do have a couple of automatics, if he goes down the Seiko 5 route then servicing etc really isn't an issue as it's cheap and can be done anywhere. I like the accuracy of quartz but I do like knowing I have a tiny little machine of whizzing bits on my wrist too.

You could also lead him to the dark side and he could get a Casio for accuracy to be able to set his automatic by! 😄.

I’d try the Lunar Pilot 43 first, but Pagani Design makes an homage on AliExpress that is quartz.

If it’s just a layout thing and you want something higher quality, you could try this:

He likes black watches, so he would probably not consider this

Ah yes, a struggle I know well. Then I would consider a Dan Henry 1962 in black. It's a great piece and should be around that 250 mark buuut they might have sold old and may need to resort to ebay or chrono24.

If brand doesn’t matter, you could look at the Pagani Design variant.

Came here to say this. Picked one up for 70 dollars recently and it's an excellent "try it out for cheap" watch. Look up YouTube reviews, people compare it to the original and are generally impressed.

Seiko offers several attractive chronographs in steel and black for less than $250. I went to Jomashop and found the following:

Tissot has a range of styles around USD250, I have a PRC 200 that's 10+ years old, great finishing and quality.
