An Appreciation on Vintage Watches

So I noticed that from my watch collection, I felt like I needed something for formal occasions, something simple for wear. So I decided to browse and research the web for dress watches, particularly I wanted to try and search on Chrono24.

I didn't have much expectations on what I am looking for, as long as it is simple for wear and fit for the occasion, then I am set. But of course, I also need to take into account my budget as I still need to save and use other funds for other necessities. But then something popped up and it made me curious.

I saw an old 1976 Timex Marlin, with the reference, 26160-02476. At first it got me thinking, the movement could be rusty and may need servicing in the future, or it may never run at all. But on the other hand, the more I look at the watch, the more I started to appreciate the craftsmanship of this timepiece, the deterioration of condition, especially still being able to function and has been taken care over the years. It's kind of the same feeling to my love in analogue photography, where you just appreciate the imperfection of the condition as the tool has seen and been through a lot.

So I decided to try and make an offer, and long story short, I was able to secure the watch and have it delivered. Originally it came with a brown leather strap which still looks great.

However, I then replaced it with a black calfskin leather strap and it looked precisely what I envisioned to what my dress watch would look like.

As soon as I got my hand on it, I just appreciate it more and more, the imperfections and deteriorations of the case and glass, the simple roman numerals of the dials, and just the clean look and simple hand wound movement of the watch.

This is my first vintage watch and I have to say I am very happy to how it turned out.

Good choise👌I also think vintage is a great way to achieve good, or fantastic, looking dress pieces. It’s hard to make a temporary dress watch look really good and very often they come with a steep price tag.

Preach Brother Per, preach.

A black leather strap on almost any watch made from 1945-65 is an instant "dress watch".
